A dark comic novel about life, love, pain, nursing, and being gay, this book takes you on a rollercoaster ride through the on-and-off duty life of a gay male nurse in the early 1980s before AIDS became omnipresent. It tells how he wants to make a difference with his life by helping those in need.
Body parts that came off in his hands. Teenagers with phantom pregnancies. Doctors unable to tell the difference between their left and their right. Violent drunks. Singing relatives. Sexism. And more nudity than the sex industry... Michael Alexander never knew what he was getting himself into. But now, sixteen years since he first launched into his nursing career - as the only man in a gynaecology ward - he's pretty much dealt with everything...
A bit about the author This book follows my progression from a theatre porter to student nurse to becoming a professional nurse. In line with confidentiality, I have changed the names of people, except for two of my very good friends who have given permission to use their real names. I never wanted to be a Nurse. I always wanted to work in a laboratory which I did from leaving school. Nursing came out of the blue, after taking a temporary job as a theatre porter. To this day I have never looked back. Nursing has changed a lot over the years, you cannot have as much fun as you used to. The person who introduced me to nursing I am no longer with, after twenty years we parted company as friends, and I thank her for that introduction to nursing. I am now happily married to an amazing person, who is very supportive and has my sense of humour. I have certainly met my match there. She too has also encouraged me to write this book. These are merely a sample of the things that happened to me whilst I was training and practicing as a Nurse. I have changed people's names to keep them anonymous. I can confirm that everything you read in this book is factual and have genuinely happened.
