This book focuses on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's relations with the world of cinema. Far from being an occasional occupation, García Márquez's film work forms an intrinsic part of his overall aesthetic and literary poetics. The book's primary aim is to present a detailed study of Garcia Márquez's wide-ranging filmography, which has never received a comprehensive, systematic analysis. Rocco argues that it should be recognised as an integral part of the author's narrative output, and brought into the mainstream of studies concerning his literary activity. The first part of the book reconstructs the trajectory of Garcia Marquez's career in cinema and his connections with the world of film. The second part looks at all the screenplays written by García Márquez on which actual films have been based. These are examined chronologically, but also analysed according to thematic and aesthetic concerns and placed in relation to the novels and short stories with which they are 'twinned' in terms of the film product. In the 1920s, Los Angeles enjoyed a buoyant homegrown Spanish-language culture comprised of local and itinerant stock companies that produced zarzuelas, stage plays, and variety acts. After the introduction of sound films, Spanish-language cinema thrived in the city's downtown theatres, screening throughout the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s in venues such as the Teatro Eléctrico, the California, the Roosevelt, the Mason, the Azteca, the Million Dollar, and the Mayan Theater, among others. With the emergence and growth of Mexican and Argentine sound cinema in the early to mid-1930s, downtown Los Angeles quickly became the undisputed capital of Latin American cinema culture in the United States. Meanwhile, the advent of talkies resulted in the Hollywood studios hiring local and international talent from Latin America and Spain for the production of films in Spanish. Parallel with these productions, a series of Spanish-language films were financed by independent producers. As a result, Los Angeles can be viewed as the most important hub in the United States for the production, distribution, and exhibition of films made in Spanish for Latin American audiences. In April 2017, the International Federation of Film Archives organized a symposium, "Hollywood Goes Latin: Spanish-Language Cinema in Los Angeles," which brought together scholars and film archivists from all of Latin America, Spain, and the United States to discuss the many issues surrounding the creation of Hollywood's "Cine Hispano." The papers presented in this two-day symposium are collected and revised here. This is a joint publication of FIAF and UCLA Film & Television Archive.

Moreover, Mexico has the most advanced movie industry in the Spanish-speaking world, and its impact on Mexican culture and society cannot be overstated. Mexico's Cinema: A Century of Film and Filmmakers is a collection of fourteen essays that encompass the first 100 years of the cinema of Mexico. Included are original contributions written specifically for this title, plus a few classic pieces in the field of Mexican cinema studies never before available in English. These essays explore a variety of themes including race and ethnicity, gender issues, personalities, and the historical development of a national cinematic style. Each of the book's three sections-The Silent Cinema, The Golden Age, and The Contemporary Era-is preceded by a short introduction to the period and a presentation of the major themes addressed in the section. This insightful anthology is the first published study that includes pieces by Mexican and North American scholars, including a piece by the internationally acclaimed essayist Carlos Monsivais. Contributors include other acclaimed scholars and critics as well as young scholars who are currently making their mark in the area of film studies of Mexico. These authors represent various fields-community studies, film studies, cultural history, ethnic studies, and gender studies-making this volume an interdisciplinary resource, important for courses in Latin America and Third World cinema, Mexican history and culture, and Chicana/o and ethnic studies.

Erase una vez... representa el esfuerzo de muchos años de preparación. El buscar el contenido de un libro es realmente difícil, ya que hay muchos temas en el mercado, pero no lo hago por ninguna razón en particular, pero siempre me ha preocupado el misterio de la vida, porque estamos aquí, ¿qué es la vida realmente? ¿Es sueño? ¿Es ilusión? ¿Qué es? Pero el hecho es que siempre me he preguntado, por que el ser humano, homínido, hace las cosas sistemáticamente, ¿quizás porque no puede salir de ese sueño? A mí me gustaría encontrar respuestas, pero las tengo en mi mente. Es realmente difícil, escoger el tema de un libro, ya que hay en el mercado multitud de ejemplares, unos mejores que otros, pero yo he querido hacer algo distinto en la narrativa que hay desde Homero, hasta nuestros días. No sé si el libro será de su agrado, ya que sobre gustos no hay nada escrito, pero de todas maneras he puesto todo en él, la ilusión de conectar con la gente, de aportar algo al sistema educativo y cultural del planeta, etc., pero lo que sí es cierto es que les guste o no, es un intento de acercarme a Uds. y a la verdad de las cosas.
