This book presents and discusses mathematical models, numerical methods and computational techniques used for solving coupled problems in science and engineering. It takes a step forward in the formulation and solution of real-life problems with a multidisciplinary vision, accounting for all of the complex couplings involved in the physical description. Simulation of multifaceted physics problems is a common task in applied research and industry. Often a suitable solver is built by connecting together several single-aspect solvers into a network. The ninth edition of the International Conference on Computational Methods for Coupled Problems in Science and Engineering (COUPLED PROBLEMS 2021) was organized to take place on 13-16 June 2021. Due to the pandemic, COUPLED 2021 was a fully online and completely synchronous conference. The previous eight editions of this conference were held on the islands of Santorini (Greece) on 25-28 May 2005; Ibiza (Spain) on 21-23 May 2007; Ischia (Italy) on 8-11 June 2009; Kos (Greece) on 20-22 June 2011; Ibiza (Spain) on 17-19 June 2013; San Servolo, Venice (Italy), on 18-20 May 2015; Rhodes Island (Greece) on 12-14 June 2017; and Sitges (Spain) on 3-5 June 2019. The objectives of COUPLED PROBLEMS 2021 were to present and discuss the state of the art in mathematical models, numerical methods and computational techniques for solving coupling problems of a multidisciplinary character in science and engineering. The conference's goal was to make advances in the formulation and solution of real-life problems with a multidisciplinary perspective, accounting for all the complex couplings involved in the physical description of the problem. The conference was one of the Thematic Conferences of the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS) and a Special Interest Conference of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM). It was also supported by other scientific organizations in Europe and across the globe.

Nowadays inverse problems and applications in science and engineering represent an extremely active research field. Fluid-structure interactions (FSI), i.e., the interplay of some moveable or deformable structure with an internal or surrounding fluid, are among the most widespread and most challenging coupled or multi-physics problems. Although much has been accomplished in developing good computational FSI methods and despite convincing solutions to a number of classes of problems including those presented in this book, there is a need for more comprehensive studies showing that the computational methods proposed are reliable, robust, and efficient beyond the classes of problems they have successfully been applied to.This volume of LNCSE, a sequel to vol. 53, which contained, among others, the first numerical benchmark for FSI problems and has received considerable attention since then, presents a collection of papers from the "First International Workshop on Computational Engineering - special focus FSI," held in Herrsching in October 2009 and organized by three DFG-funded consortia. Fluids play an important role in environmental systems appearing as surface water in rivers, lakes, and coastal regions or in the subsurface as well as in the atmosphere. Mechanics of environmental fluids is concerned with fluid motion, associated mass and heat transport as well as deformation processes in subsurface systems. In this reference work the fundamental modelling approaches based on continuum mechanics for fluids in the environment are described, including porous media and turbulence. Numerical methods for solving the process governing equations as well as its object-oriented computer implementation are discussed and illustrated with examples.
