Supporting the Success of Adult and Online Students, the fifth book in the Proven Practices in Higher Education series by City University of Seattle, presents twenty-seven chapters on supporting and retaining adult students. Each chapter, written by different authors and teams of authors, presents another perspective on how to motivate and encourage adult learners. The first third of the book focuses on how to teach adult students. They include information on the importance of creating a social support network, establishing a solid instructor presence in online classrooms, and matching students with dedicated mentors. Educators will learn how to identify the "dark triad" of disruptive personalities in a classroom setting. The second third of the book includes innovative ways of motivating adult learners. These include using new forms of media to engage students and creating professional learning communities to provide them support. The last third of the book presents strategies for advising students, especially those that may be returning from a long break in their education. Chapters include information about retaining doctoral students and helping returning undergraduates. These strategies and others will be immensely helpful to educators looking for a new angle in reaching and engaging with their students.
This publication¿the latest report from AAC&U¿s Liberal Education and America¿s Promise (LEAP) initiative¿defines a set of educational practices that research has demonstrated have a significant impact on student success. Author George Kuh presents data from the National Survey of Student Engagement about these practices and explains why they benefit all students, but also seem to benefit underserved students even more than their more advantaged peers. The report also presents data that show definitively that underserved students are the least likely students, on average, to have access to these practices.
This guide is intended to provide teachers of student with disabilities with resources, ideas, and procedures in implementing community-based instruction (CBI). The first chapter defines CBI, explains its importance, differentiates CBI from field trips, discusses appropriate CBI participants and stakeholders, and reviews the research on CBI. Chapter 2 focuses on expectations for CBI including expected outcomes, expectations for students, expectations for families, expectations for communities, and how expected outcomes of CBI respond to school reform issues. The following chapter considers procedures for program implementation including 10 steps to utilizing CBI, CBI sites for older students, and necessary resources and support systems. Chapter 4 considers the school and classroom component of CBI such as application of the general curriculum and alternative curriculum approaches and the transition portion of the Individualized Education Program. The following chapter focuses on development of independence and self-determination skills as well as natural environments for CBI and transfer of skills from classroom to community. Chapter 6 addresses issues concerned with evaluation of CBI programs, noting important evaluation questions and how to use assessment information to show accountability. The last two chapters focus on maintaining and generalizing community skills and the dynamics of community-based instruction, respectively. Appendices include a variety of sample forms. Action Research Communities presents a new perspective on two current and proven educational practices: classroom-/school-based action research and professional learning communities. Implementation of one or the other of these practices often results in a variety of possible benefits for the teaching–learning process, for student achievement, and for overall school improvement. While these might seem to be separate, isolated practices, the author has taken the beneficial aspects of each practice and merged them into a cohesive and potentially powerful concept, coined "action research communities." Each of the two concepts or approaches (action research and professional learning communities) is presented and discussed in detail.
