The practical dimension of communication is often quickly grasped by students but theory is found tricky in various ways. This book, therefore, focuses purely on the theoretical dimensions of communication. It is very difficult to claim pure originality in communication theory but an effort has been made to explain the selected topics in a lucid, student-friendly manner. As far as the selection of topics is concerned, the syllabi of various universities have been referred to. The first three units focus on introducing communication in detail and its two major types – verbal and non-verbal. Each of the sub-types of non-verbal communication viz. proxemics, paralanguage, etc. would ideally demand one unit each. But that is out of the scope of such a companion. Out of four language acquisition skills – LSRW – only two have been taken up here: listening and reading. Interpersonal communication and teamwork carry such immense application in today’s workplace scenario that it deserves a place in a book dealing with fundamentals such as this one.

Therefore, what is important is when an English word is spoken, it should be pronounced in a manner that can be understood correctly by the listener. That is what Mr. Jitendra has so successfully done in this book. I am happy to commend this book to all the readers. —DR. R.K. PATNAIK Former Vice Chancellor, The ICFAI University, Tripura

The authors also include text directed to faculty to provide ideas about framing their community-engaged course and integrating the book.
This text responds to current content and discipline issues by being rooted in communication scholarship and by addressing and integrating issues of social diversity. The book provides a theoretically unified and pragmatically oriented approach to human communication (i.e., a good balance of theory and skills); it consistently integrates issues of social diversity into both theoretical foundations and discussions of skills and particular communication contexts. The text provides students with an understanding of theory by showing them how they can apply communication to their own lives.
Health professionals need to learn the communication skills that will create collaborative and mutually satisfying relationships with patients. The failure of doctors to relate effectively to patients results in noncompliance, malpractice suits, longer stays in hospitals and other negative outcomes. Interpersonal skills can be easily learned by studying the techniques described by Gordon and Edwards. Using cases, interviews, dialogues, and vignettes, the authors provide effective models or blueprints for health professionals to follow. Gordon is a psychologist who has pioneered internationally recognized effectiveness training programs widely used by teachers, parents, salesmen, managers, and other professionals. He has published six books that have sold over five million copies in 17 languages. In this work, he has enlisted the expertise of Edwards, a highly respected medical doctor and educator, to provide the necessary insider's view of the health profession. Together they make a convincing case for doctors to develop closer and more collaborative relationships with patients.
