Brazilians are gracious, friendly, fun-loving people, which makes their country a very inviting place to visit for pleasure or business. So great is their cordiality that Brazilians will say "yes" to almost any request--even when they actually mean "no"--which can be quite confusing for U.S. visitors who are used to a more direct style of communication. In fact, as Americans spend time in Brazil, they discover a number of cultural differences that can hamper their communication with Brazilians. There are an estimated of 1.3 million Brazilian immigrants living in the United States (approximately 460,000 Brazilian Americans as of mid-2019). The Brazilian population in the United States is relatively small, and the lack of knowledge of Brazilian immigrants and the tendency to stereotype based on the perception and assumption has had a negative impact on many Brazilian ministries. There are only thirteen Brazilian ministries within the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the total number of Brazilians' membership within the PC(USA) is approximately seven hundred people. Some of these ministries have existed for over twenty years, but very little information has been given about their existence and experiences. Brazilian ministries that thrive most in the PC(USA)'s body cherish their own identity, understand what those essential factors and keys are, and embrace the challenges and opportunities in a cross-cultural experience. Every thriving Brazilian ministry is made of people who reflect the image of God in the migration context and plays a unique model to love outcast Brazilians living in this promised land.
Walking west on 46th Street in Manhattan, just three blocks from Rockefeller Center, one passes Brazilian restaurants, the office of New York's Brazilian newspaper, a Brazilian travel agency, a business that sends remittances and wires flowers to Brazil, and a store that sells Brazilian food products, magazines, newspapers, videos, and tapes. This book traces the rise and decline of Gilberto Freyre's vision of racial and cultural mixture (mestiçagem - or race mixing) as the defining feature of Brazilian culture in the twentieth century. Eakin traces how mestiçagem moved from a conversation among a small group of intellectuals to become the dominant feature of Brazilian national identity, demonstrating how diverse Brazilians embraced mestiçagem, via popular music, film and television, literature, soccer, and protest movements. The Freyrean vision of the unity of Brazilians built on mestiçagem begins a gradual decline in the 1980s with the emergence of an identity politics stressing racial differences and multiculturalism.
