This book critically examines the main features of intercultural communication. It addresses how ideology permeates intercultural processes and develops an alternative 'grammar' of culture. It explores intercultural communication within the context of global politics, seeks to address the specific problems that derive from Western ideology, and sets out an agenda for research.
This book focuses on how sign language ideologies influence, manifest in, and are challenged by communicative practices. Sign languages are minority languages using the visual-gestural and tactile modalities, whose affordances are very different from those of spoken languages using the auditory-oral modality.

This volume grew out of the 29th International LAUD Symposium, held on March 27-29, 2002 at the University of Koblenz-Landau in Landau. The book represents one of the first modern studies that explores the relationships between language, discourse, and ideology from an international, multidisciplinary perspective. Therefore, it is centrally concerned with ideology and the mutual constitution of social practices and social structures through discourse.
