In today’s world, data must be sent around the world cheaply and securely, and that requires origin authentication, integrity protection, and confidentiality – the recipient of a message should be able to ascertain who sent the message, be sure that the message has not been changed en route, and be sure that the data arrives without having been read by anyone else. The second editor invented signcryption, an area of cryptography that studies systems that simultaneously provide origin authentication, integrity protection and confidentiality for data. Signcryption schemes combine the features of digital signature schemes with those of public-key encryption schemes and aim to provide security guarantees in a way that is provably correct and significantly less computationally expensive than the “encrypt-then-sign” method most commonly adopted in public-key cryptography. Among the space activities of the last three decades satellite communications (SATCOM) has found the widest application in meeting both civil and military communications requirements. Several international, regional and national SATCOM systems of increasing capacity, capability and complexity have been and are being implemented over the years. The latest versions are utilizing such concepts as spot beams, processing transponders in SS-TDMA and operations in different frequency bands including the EHF band. On the military side, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, France and NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) have been the only owners and operators of military SATCOM systems in the West. The systems in being and under development use satellites and ground terminals with characteristics which differ from the civilian ones with respect to frequency bands utilised and survivability and interoperability. The SATCOM has given the military users the potential of having much-needed mobility, flexibility and survivability in strategic and tactical communications for land, sea and air operations. It must, however, be said particularly for the military SATCOM systems that they have been evolved in big jumps, both in time and capability, each jump involving the deployment of two or three often specially designed large satellites, large expenses and rather traumatic transition between jumps. Despite these undesirable features these systems did not have the required degree of suevivability and flexibility.
The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Enhancing Cryptographic Primitives with Techniques from Error Correcting Codes has been organized in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, on October 6-9, 2008 by the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with COSIC, KU Leuven and in the framework of the NATO Science for Peace and Security program. Goal of the organizers was to gather international experts from both fields - coding theory and cryptography - in order to exchange ideas, define new challenges and open problems for future research. These proceedings present the state-of-the-art in the current research on cryptography applying techniques and results from coding theory.
