However, after Independence, the progress of the municipal revolution was stifled by the establishment of an over-centralised administrative machine that belittled the role of cities and towns in Irish life in favour of the rural and agricultural. --
Clonmel borstal in county Tipperary was the first and only such institution in Ireland and opened in 1906 for the purpose of reforming male offenders aged between sixteen and twenty-one years. The book also provides comparisons between the administration of the system by the British government prior to Independence and the Irish state after 1921. Two key periods, from 1922-24 and from 1940-46, when the borstal was removed from Clonmel for military purposes, are examined. The book explores the renewed government interest and investment in the borstal in the aftermath of the 'Father Flanagan controversy', following its return to Clonmel in 1946. With signs that the system might finally be on course to fulfill its potential, a number of factors ensured that this optimism was to be short-lived and in 1956 Clonmel borstal ceased operations and the institution was transferred to Dublin. Reidy utilises primarily unpublished official sources to analyse the daily operation of Clonmel borstal.
A guide to contemporary approaches to studying Ireland in the nineteenth century.
This book, by a leading authority, is the first comprehensive survey of Ireland's industrial archaeology. Divided into five main sections, the subject is detailed in nineteen chapters, each dealing with a major industrial activity, its technology, and important surviving sites. Fully referenced and illustrated throughout, this will become the standard work on the subject.
"This book highlights the principal themes and elements in the making of the landscape, and the sources which can assist historians and historical geographers in studying and understanding Irish landscape history. Major and local sources relating to the natural environment, cultural landscapes and the built environment are explored. The book also looks at representations of landscapes in literature, painting and other artistic sources which can provide insights into the nature of real and imagined worlds of the past. The ultimate source which features prominently throughout this study is the landscape itself on which generations before us have inscribed the marks of their presence in fields, farms, houses, villages, towns, roads, lanes and the infrastructure of settlement."--BOOK JACKET.
