Excerpt from Notes on Church Organs: Their Position and the Materials Used in Their Construction There are some facts of a technical character that have such important bearing, not only on the development of art principles in English organ building, but on the probable deterioration of the art; yet concerning which so much ignorance and misunderstanding prevail, that I have endeavoured by the following pages to throw such light upon them as may be drawn from my own knowledge, and from the far more important long practical experience of my grandfather, the late J. C. Bishop, and of my father, who has necessarily directed much of his attention to the subject. I allude to the position in which organs are frequently, nay generally, placed in churches and other buildings, particularly to the modern resource of an "organ chamber"; and to the materials of which the instrument itself should be constructed.
