Excerpt from Christ and the Kingdom of God I should like to add, both for myself and for many students whom I know, an expression of sincere gratitude to Professor Hogg for his book. He will probably never know how many students have been decisively helped by it. Since the above was set up, Mr. Glover's book, The Jesus of History, has appeared, to the joy of all students of the life of Christ. Excerpt from The Kingdom of God Biblically and Historically Considered I shall endeavour therefore, treating the subject historically, to take into account, not only the prepara tion for the Christian idea Of the kingdom of God in the line of God's special revelation to Israel, but also those aims and ideas of other nations that partially strove after the same end, and that came afterwards into contact, for good or evil, with the carrying out of Christ's ideal and aim. Excerpt from The Kingdom of God When the forerunner's voice was stiļ¬‚ed in the dungeon of Herod, Jesus caught up his word and preached the Utopia of John with a wider vision and sweeter note. The hereditary dream of the Jew passed through the soul of Jesus and was transformed. The local widened into the univer sal; the material was raised to the spiritual. A Jewish state with Jerusalem for its capital, and a greater David for its king, changed at the touch of Jesus into a moral kingdom whose throne should be in the heart and its borders coterminous with the race. The largeness of Jesus' mind is its glory and its misfortune. The magnificent conception was refused by His countrymen because their God was a national Deity; it has been too often re duced by His disciples because they have no hori zon. They have been apt to think that Christian ity is an extremely clever scheme by which a lim ited number of souls will secure Heaven - a rocket apparatus for a shipwrecked crew. Perhaps there fore outside people should be excused for speaking of Christianity as a system of the higher selfish ness, because they have some grounds for their misunderstanding. Every one ought to read Jesus' own words and he'would find that Jesus did not live and die to afford select Pharisees an immunity from the burden of their fellow men, but to found a Kingdom that would be the salvation of the world. Excerpt from The Kingdom of Christ: A Series of Ten Lectures There is no attempt to set forth anything new; but rather to expound and illustrate in a popular way cer tain phases of the thought of more recent years con cerning these matters which have been dealt with almost exclusively in a technical manner. The illustrations are not scriptural in themselves, but are used in an attempt to make clear certain teachings of the Scriptures. It would be unsafe to build into a system of theology such phrases as the Magna Charta - or Constitution of The Kingdom. They are not scriptural; but the author believes that they will serve well to illustrate some very vital teachings of the Master. In short, these lectures seek to help some of the laity to a better understanding of some of the modern prob lems that concern the spiritual side of the Christian fundamentals. Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Kingdom of God, and the Church In the body of our Lord's teaching as recorded in the Gospels the references to the kingdom of God occupy a prominent place. According to the common testimony of the Synoptical Gospels Jesus opened his public ministry in Galilee with the announcement, that the kingdom was at hand, Matt. iv. 17; Mk. i. 15; Lk. iv. 43. In the last mentioned passage he even declares that the main purpose of his mission consists in the preaching of the good tidings of the kingdom of God. Excerpt from The Coming Kingdom It is the purpose of this little book to set forth, in Scripture language, as far as possible, a clear-cut distinction between the Church and the Kingdom of the Lord Jesus, the Christ. So few people seem to have grasped the real idea of the Kingdom, which is so clearly set forth in the Scriptures, that the author has been burdened for more than ten years with the need for such a work. John the Baptist came preaching, "Repent; for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." Jesus also preached the gospel of the Kingdom from the same text. So prominent was the thought of the Kingdom in the mind of our Lord that the word is used 124 times in the four gospels, whereas the word Church is used only 3 times. In the use of Scripture quotations, we shall use the Authorized, the Revised, and the American Revised versions, and Leeser's translation of the Old Testament. Aware of the fact that only a few readers will make the references to the Scriptures, where only the number of the chapter and verse is given, it is the plan of this book to embody the full text into the work. Let no one object to the length, or the number of the quotations given; for it is the opinion of the author that these will be the strength of the work. It is his purpose to put together in close connection all the Scriptures bearing directly and unmistakably on the subject in hand. We shall not hesitate either to use the same texts in different chapters as they bear on the thought in each chapter; for the same texts are pertinent to two, three, or even more thoughts; viz., the Kingdom, the King, the Throne, and the Nations. In the minds of many the Church and the Kingdom are synonymous terms. Indeed, that has been the teaching of the pulpit for many years, but they are essentially different, and must be so recognized or confusion follows, and the mind of the reader becomes clouded. Let each text have its most apparent meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Kingdom of God: Established, Invaded and Restored From Invasion It portrays Christ's life and death for man, - the climax of the love of God, - as man's voluntary substitute, that the death penalty might be met, the demand of jus tice satisfied, eternal life given to man, and sin and death banished from the universe forever.
