This English-language volume is an edited collection of articles selected from the 2011 and 2012 Chinese-language volumes of the Green Book of Population and Labor. This volume starts with a chapter that explores the trajectory and future of China's demographic changes, as well as the role population projections should play in population policy through a comparison of data from the Sixth Population Census conducted in China and the United Nations population projection. Other topics discussed in this volume include changes in fertility and their implications to the labor market; demographic transition and its contribution to economic growth; employment structure and its problems; and reform of the labor market. This volume intends to draw lessons from the experiences and discuss trends of the labor market and social protection. This translated volume is based on the publication Green Book of Population and Labor (No. 20), originally published in Chinese by the Social Science Academic Press (SASS). The focus of this volume is high-quality employment in China. The topics covered include China’s labor market during the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan; labor supply and demand; the economic impact of consumption among migrant workers; labor supply elasticity and productivity; geographical and structural shifts in job opportunities; and the educational profiles and income distribution among migrants. The final chapter discusses the opportunities and challenges associated with the rapid development of AI and robotics.
This volume is based on Green Book of Population and Labor No. 16 originally published in Chinese. Chapter one reviews developments in population and family planning during the 12th five-year plan period (2011–2015), presents forecast, and examines the relationship between demographic changes and economic development. Chapter two focuses on population movement trends and employment situation of rural migrant workers. The country’s overall employment situation in this period is presented in chapter three. Chapter four examines trends in China’s labor supply and demand. Chapters five and six look at recent progress in and development of China’s old-age insurance and medical insurance systems. As in previous volumes, this one contains policy suggestions for labor market development and population management.

All the articles featured in this volume first appeared in the Chinese-language edition of Blue Book of Chinese Society 2014. This collection of articles selected from Blue Book of Chinese Society 2016 published in Chinese reviews China’s social condition from 2015 to 2016. The articles cover a wide range of social issues, including employment, income and consumption, social security, education, medical and health, and others. Findings are presented and analyzed from a number of social surveys on topics such as the public’s conception of a “good society”, quality of life in urban areas, migrant workers, university students and graduates, and the development of medical and health system.
