This collection of articles selected from Blue Book of Chinese Education 2015, published in Chinese, reviews the condition of China’s education development in 2014. The wide range of topics covered in this volume fall under two major themes: reform and equity. Chapters on reform focus on the college entrance exam (“Gaokao”), secondary vocational education, senior high school education, provincially and locally-funded colleges, private universities and junior high school admissions policies. Chapters in the second half of the book provide readers with an in-depth account of efforts made to improve equity in special and early childhood education, study-abroad preparation classes, and rural education. The appendix includes a report of budgetary expenditure on education and chronology of major events.

This collection of articles selected from Blue Book of Chinese Society 2017 published in Chinese reviews China’s social condition from 2016 to 2017. The articles cover a wide range of social issues, including employment, income and consumption, social security, education, health, food and drug safety, and others. Findings are presented and analyzed from a number of social surveys on topics such as the impact of industrial structure on employment, new social class, value and belief system of youth, and public attitudes toward genetic modification. Each article ends with policy suggestions, and a statistical overview of China’s social development is given in the last chapter.

This book combines the ideologies of parentocracy and consumer theory as theoretical lenses to view the private supplementary tutoring, also known as shadow education, with a focus on the demand at primary and lower secondary levels in China. It first explains parents’ motivations of seeking private tutoring and their decision-making dynamics, and then explores the evolving micro-level process of demand that has changed over time. It further investigates how demand for private tutoring varies across parental socioeconomic status. This book also discusses parents’ attitudes towards the Double Reduction policy and corresponding changes in their demand for tutoring. It concludes with some implications for regulating private tutoring and for improving school education. This book has pertinence in other countries as well as in China. Unpacking the demand for tutoring improves understanding of the global expansion and changing shapes of the phenomenon. This English-language volume is an edited collection of articles selected from the 2013 Chinese-language volume of the Green Book of Population and Labor. This volume starts with an overview report on a nationwide survey on migrant workers in 2012, conducted by the Household Survey Office at the National Bureau of Statistics. This survey report provides information on the size, movements, employment, housing and social security situation of migrant workers in China. Other topics discussed in this volume include labor supply and policies, household registration system reform, employment policies and social protection of “vulnerable” groups in China. Like other volumes in the series, this volume intends to draw lessons from the experiences and discuss trends of the labor market in China.
