Excerpt from Child's Life of Washington George Washington was born at Bridge's Creek, Westmoreland county, Virginia, on the 22d of February, 1732. Before he was ten years of age, he was deprived of the guidance and example of an excellent Father; but the judicious economy and prudent affection of his remaining parent provided for him instruction in the useful branches of knowledge. Above all, she trained him to a love of truth, and successfully cultivated that high moral sense which characterized his actions from his youth. At the age of fifteen, Washington received the appointment of midshipman in the British navy, but at the earnest desire of his Mother declined accepting it, and afterwards practised the profession of a surveyor. S he wan ts stories of intrinsic in ter est to children, wh ich may be either read or related, for the purpose of introducing the children to literature, myth, history, and science. When he has reached his fifth school year, and generally not until then, under present rates of progress, the child is able to read such stories for himself. Excerpt from Life of Washington So many lives of George Washington have already been written that a new one perhaps te quires some justification. The character and deeds of the man who stands in the foreground of American history may be regarded from many sides. The brief biography in these pages must, at the beginning, claim to be a woman's way of looking at George Washington. "In the present volume a clear narrative has been attempted in a very condensed form, omitting and avoiding such technical and abstruse expressions as frequently occur in larger works, and aiming chiefly to be understood by the boys for whom it has been written. In preparing it the writer is largely indebted to the three able biographers above mentioned, especially Sparks and Irving, to whose full and detailed accounts she refers all those who wish to study the subject more minutely."--Preface.

Excerpt from The American Boy's Life of Washington IT might almost seem presumptuous for any one to offer another version of the life of Washington, when the ground has been so fully occupied by Worthier pens. After Marshall, Sparks, and Irving have written, who indeed need take up the subject Yet it was suggested that a boys' life of this great man might still be welcomed by the public, and would find readers among the rising generation those who would shrink from a larger work, and yet could find enjoyment in a little book like this. Excerpt from The Life of George Washington In the year 1486, a foot traveller, holding a boy by the hand, stopped at the gate of a convent in Spain, to ask for some bread and water for his wearied child. While he was receiving it from a kind Friar, he gave him a history of himself, and told him for what purpose he had come into that country. At that time, the inhabitants of Europe, Asia, and Africa, did not know that there was any other land than those continents, and some islands not very distant from them. The most learned men, who were endeavouring to increase their knowledge of geography, thought that the ocean surrounded those countries like a great belt, and Christopher Columbus, the stranger who stood at the convent gate, was perhaps the first person who thought that belt might be crossed to the land on the opposite side; which was supposed to be the eastern part of Asia. He vas born about the year 1436, and was the son of a wool-comber, who lived in a city of Italy, called Genoa, and Avho was too poor to give him much education; but Columbus was very attentive to the instructions which he received in the few years that he went to school.
