Excerpt from Chemical Characteristics of Banded Ingredients of Coal Data are presented on certain fundamental chemical characteristics for four sets of banded ingredients and whole coals from Illinois representing three ranks - high Volatile bituminous A, B, and C. Evidence is shown of variation by rank of the banded ingredients, Vitrain, clarain, and durain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Chemistry of Coal The methods described in the section on analysis are those which I have found in practice to be satisfactory, and I hope that this section will prove of value to those who have' occasion to examine coals from the analyst's point of view. Excerpt from The Constituents of Coal Soluble in Phenol The problem of the chemical constitution of coal is not only of scientific interest, but is also of much importance from the standpoint of the commercial world, because solution of the great problems involved in the technical treatment of coal can scarcely be expected without further knowledge regarding the chemical nature of the sub stances in coal. Manifestly, if so little progress has been made in so important a field of research, there must be some special reason for the fact. An explanation more than adequate is to be found in the extreme ditfi culty of finding a satisfactory point of attack, owing to the great resistance of the coal substance to the action of the ordinary solvents and reagents. Excerpt from The Chemistry of Coal The literature dealing with coal and its chemical properties is of such an extent that an exhaustive record of the facts and theories contained therein would occupy volumes. All that is attempted in this monograph is to show the chief methods by which the problems of coal-constitution have been attacked, and to outline some of the more interesting results obtained. It is hoped in this way to indicate to those desirous of carrying out research work on coal and kindred substances lines along which investigation may lead to concrete conclusions. An attempt has been made to mention all the more important papers in the bibliography, as it was felt that to anyone contemplating serious research work on coals this section should be of value. The methods described in the section on analysis are those which I have found in practice to be satisfactory, and I hope that this section will prove of value to those who have occasion to examine coals from the analysts point of view.
