In dairy industries throughout the world there is a desire to optimize udder health. An improved udder health will lead to improved animal welfare, improved production efficiency and a reduction of the use of antibiotics. To improve udder health, first of all, technical knowledge on issues such as treatment, milking, infectious pressure and host resistance is important. However, over the years we learned that knowledge alone is not enough: knowledge has to be used. And for knowledge to be used, farmers have to be motivated. This requires knowledge about motivation and communication. In this book, recent knowledge on technical udder health issues is combined with knowledge on motivation and communication. A large number of descriptions of mastitis control programs that are being carried out worldwide is combined with more specific studies. These are aimed at effective advising, motivation and communication strategies, economics, and technical studies on mastitis control and prevention. Most countries in South-East Asia have established smallholder dairy farming industries through social welfare and rural development programs to provide a regular cash flow for poorly resourced farmers. These farms are now being treated as accepted rural industries and require a more business-minded approach based on changes to farm profitability. Business Management for Tropical Dairy Farmers gives smallholder dairy farmers the business management skills they will need to remain sustainable. Drawing on detailed financial analyses of smallholders in countries such as Pakistan, Thailand and Malaysia, it shows how to budget cash inputs to match cash outflows during different seasons of the year, and how to invest wisely in improving cattle housing and feeding systems. If farmers make greater use of formats and structures for farm costs and returns, it will increase their awareness of the relative importance of all their financial inputs in terms of cost of production per kilogram of milk produced on the farm. It will also allow them to make more meaningful and timely decisions by correctly costing planned changes to their routine farming practices. The book will also be of use to support organisations to more clearly define the key drivers of profit on smallholder farms, and to government departments and national dairy organisations to routinely evaluate and update their industry policies.
According to the European legislation (Regulation EC No 853/2004), the food business operators collecting raw milk intended for the production of milk and dairy products must ensure compliance with certain health requirements for the animals. The animals must not show any symptoms of infectious diseases transmittable to humans, or signs of diseases of the udder or the genital tract that could contaminate milk. Furthermore, they must belong to a holding free or officially free of tuberculosis and brucellosis, and no unauthorized substances or authorized drugs must have been administered without respect to the withdrawal period. Dairy Farming: Operations Management, Animal Welfare and Milk Production presents a study with the goal of evaluating the compliance with the mentioned criteria in milk samples collected from 100 different dairy farms located in Central Italy. Additionally, under European milk quotas, dairy farms in Europe were limited in the amount of milk they could produce. While quotas were gradually increased over the past four decades, European milking quotas were completely abolished in April 2015 to help meet an expected 20% increase in the global consumption of milk and dairy products by 2050. With this, European dairy farmers can freely expand milk production based upon expected milk prices controlled by open market supply and demand. The authors present a review focused on milk production forecasting models and data variation from a past and future perspective. A comprehensive review of model applications and comparisons from studies over the past two decades is carried out, and both classical and modern methods are reviewed analysed. The concluding review focuses on scientific LCA studies conducted on a variety of different milk production systems, including the treatment of milk co-products, different allocation methods, the assessment of environmental impacts caused by fertilizers and agrochemicals in feed grain production and in the different stages of milk production. However, the methodology requires a higher degree of standardization, especially for the analysis of complex agricultural and livestock systems and their various forms and characteristics.
