This volume provides an overview of new concepts in neurovascular interventions based on clinical and scientific knowledge of cerebrovascular disorders. It especially focuses on subarachnoid hemorrhage and cerebrovascular malformations, e.g. aneurysms, arterio-venous malformations, and cavernomas. A separate part addresses cerebral revascularization for both complex aneurysms and ischemia. All contributions were written by recognized experts and cover original papers presented at the 7th European Japanese Stroke Surgery Conference, held in Verona, Italy in June 2014. The authors present new trends and strategies for managing emerging problems, as well as in-depth discussions on controversial issues in the field.
This open access book presents the diagnosis, investigation and treatment of neurovascular diseases, and offers expert opinions and advice on avoiding complications in neurovascular surgery. It also covers complication management and post-operative follow-up care. The book is divided in to three parts; the first part discusses common approaches in neurovascular surgery, describing the steps, indications for and limitations of the approach, as well as the associated complications and how to avoid them. The second part addresses surgical treatment based on pathology, taking the different locations of lesions into consideration. The third part focuses on the technological developments that support neurovascular surgery, which may not be available everywhere, but have been included to help vascular surgeon understand the principles. This book is a guide for young neurosurgeons, neurosurgery residents and neurosurgery fellows, as well as for medical students and nurses who are interested in neurosurgery or are associated with this field in any way. It is also a useful teaching aid for senior neurosurgeons.
Most cerebrovascular diseases such as intracranial aneurysms (IA), arterio-venous malformations (AVM) or dural fistulas (AVF) can effectively be treated with microsurgical techniques (i.e. clipping) or with endovascular procedures (i.e. coiling). In certain patients, also gamma-knife (radiation) treatment may play a role. Sometimes, the treatment strategy may consist of a staged approach that combines some of the above-mentioned techniques in a serial manner. Likewise, also spinal vascular pathologies (i.e. spinal vascular malformations, spinal dural AV-fistulas or spinal cavernomas) may often be approached with a single treatment modality or, more rare with a staged approach. In selected cases however, simultaneous treatment combining open (micro-)surgical and endovascular procedures in one single hybrid operation may be favorable. So far only few series reported indications, potential benefits, or pitfalls with hybrid approaches in cerebrovascular surgery. This collection aims to summarise reported experiences with hybrid approaches that combine simultaneous endovascular and microsurgical interventions in a setting of vascular diseases in the brain and in the spine. It will put an emphasis on indication, benefits and potential harms of combined diagnostic-therapeutic procedures (i.e. intraoperative control DSA after clipping), advanced endovascular strategies enabled through surgical access (i.e. direct arterial punctuation after previous surgical vessel exposure) or combined therapeutic operations (i.e. proximal control through balloon occlusion during clipping).
This comprehensive guide brings neurosurgeons up to date with the latest techniques in their field. Each chapter is divided into two parts, discussing the open surgical and endovascular aspects of the treatment. Authored by a Philadelphia-based neurosurgeon, each section covers a different neurovascular disease, including brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, stroke and vascular abnormalities of the spinal cord. New techniques such as glue for aneurysms, flow diversion, acute stroke interventions and future innovations in microneurosurgery and endovascular neurosurgery, are discussed in detail. More than 550 colour images and figures illustrate all the techniques. Key points Comprehensive guide to the latest techniques in neurovascular surgery Covers wide range of neurovascular diseases discussing both open surgical and endovascular aspects of treatment Includes more than 550 colour images, illustrations and figures Authored by Philadelphia-based neurosurgeon
Fully revised and updated, the Handbook serves as a practical guide to endovascular methods and as a concise reference for neurovascular anatomy and published data about cerebrovascular disease from a neurointerventionalist’s perspective. Divided into three parts, the book covers: Fundamentals of neurovascular anatomy and basic angiographic techniques; Interventional Techniques and endovascular methods, along with useful device information and tips and tricks for daily practice; Specific Disease States, with essential clinical information about commonly encountered conditions. New features in the 2nd Edition include: Global Gems that illuminate aspects of the field outside the United States; Angio-anatomic and angio-pathologic image correlates; Newly released clinical study results influencing neurointerventional practice; Information on emerging technologies in this rapidly advancing field. The Handbook is a vital resource for all clinicians involved in neurointerventional practice, including radiologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, cardiologists, and vascular surgeons.
This work is a sampling of the Hippocratic Corpus, a collection of ancient Greek medical works. At the beginning, and interspersed throughout, there are discussions on the philosophy of being a physician. There is a large section about how to treat limb fractures, and the section called The Nature of Man describes the physiological theories of the time. The book ends with a discussion of embryology and a brief anatomical description of the heart.
