Excerpt from Cautions for the Times, Vol. 2 of 3: Addressed to the Parishioners of a Parish in England, by Their Former Rector It is the height of presumption, therefore, for any one to put forward the doctrine of the necessity of apostolical succession, (in its modern sense, ) as a principle of our church, and stigmatize as disloyal members, and false brethren, all who doubt or deny that doctrine. III. Again, with respect to the rule of faith - is it credible that, if our Reformers intended to make it a church principle, that tradition blended with Scripture. Is the rule of faith, they should have expressed themselves as they have? Holy Scripture, they say, Art. VI., containeth all things necessary to salvation; so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it Should be believed as an article of faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. But they do not add, that it is equally necessary to prove the arti cles of faith by tradition, or that it is only by tradition that the true sense of Scripture can be determined.
