What are the odds? Frank Shelton's paternal ancestor hand carried President Abraham Lincoln across the street, Good Friday 1865 from Ford's Theater. His maternal ancestor in 1912 was foreman for U.S. Park Service who planted the iconic Cherry Blossoms to life around Tidal Basin. One carried greatness in death and the other planted life. God deposited greatness in everyone and He makes no junk! We are made in His image. Mary pregnant with Jesus was not only first to carry the Gospel but God in the womb. David with a sling and couple stones toppled a giant. His greatness was not just in his hand but his head and heart. The Bible says "a double minded man is unstable in all his ways." Joseph had a coat of many colors. His dream was his siblings nightmare. They wanted him dead, Potiphar's wife wanted him in bed but this led to God's plan for his life. When you have a great gift it will inspire others and intimidate the rest. It was not the colorful coat but colossal call of God on his life that the enemy wanted him stopped dead in his tracks. MSgt Aaron Torian, a 25 year family friend of the author was recently killed in 2014 serving in Afghanistan. He was "Marine of Year" and the best of best and was buried with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery. As those Marines carried the flag draped casket without question they were carrying greatness! One chapter talks about Carrying Greatness, Sharing Greatness, Wearing Greatness and sadly, Sparing Greatness. Learn of Micah who died at 17 and donated his organs that five strangers could live. We all win when we share greatness but lose when we withhold it. The last chapter is powerful! Adoption > Abortion Presently, 125,000 abortions transpire every day. This is horrible. We can do better than that and from the womb to the tomb we all carry greatness. Shelton's ancestor carried President Lincoln but their family friend was invited as a honorary pallbearer at Elvis Presley's funeral. Shelton paints a poignant picture of what went through Joseph of Arimathea's head as he and a couple friends carried Jesus from Golgotha to Garden Tomb. His ancestor carried closest to "King of a Nation" we will have in America because the presidency is an institution not individual. " It is one thing to carry greatness but its eternally different when Greatness carries you!

Just as the Wright Brothers combined science and practice to finally realize the dream of flight, Ryan and Robert Quinn combine research and personal experience to demonstrate how to reach a psychological state that elevates us and those around us to greater heights of achievement, integrity, openness, and empathy. It's the psychological equivalent of aerodynamic lift, and it is the fundamental state of leadership. This book draws on recent advances in positive psychology and organizational science to describe four questions that, when asked in any situation, will help us experience the fundamental state of leadership. Engaging personal stories illustrate how the Quinns and others have applied these concepts at work, at home, and in the community. --
GREATNESS is a motivational book whose target audience is found in business and self-help. It is a life book, aimed at inspiring others to achieve their personal and professional best. Opening with an in-depth discussion of the nature of Greatness-what it is, what it is not, and why it is worth pursing-each subsequent chapter of the book consists of a detailed story illustrating one aspect of Greatness with examples from the sports greats that Don has interviewed over the years. This will be followed by a discussion and other related examples. There are also practical tips and plans for assisting the reader in implementing new habits, routines, practices, and philosophies of Greatness into his or her daily life. As each characteristic is outlined, the reader is challenged to look for areas in his or her professional and personal lives that can be improved by embracing these lessons. As Don often says during his speeches, "Though these characteristics are culled from some of the greatest winners in sports, not a single one requires you to be able to touch your toes! These iconic figures in sports have provided a classroom for us to learn about their pursuit of Greatness. You don't have to be good at sports - heck, you don't even have to like sports - to benefit from their lessons." It is the strong belief of those who Don has talked to over the years that greatness is available to all of us. Not in the same way or on the same field, mind you. But we all have the capacity to achieve greatness if we'll give the same dedication to these characteristics as do the winners presented and interviewed in GREATNESS.
This book is a biography of Walter Raleigh; an English statesman, soldier, writer and explorer. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonization of North America, suppressed rebellion in Ireland, helped defend England against the Spanish Armada and held political positions under Elizabeth I.
The juvenile, or two-year-old, racing careers of Colin, Man o War, Ruffian and Landaluce provide the foundation and focus for discussing the question of thoroughbred greatness and its measure. These four thoroughbreds were arguably the best juvenile runners of the twentieth century. Close on their hooves, pun intended, however, were the colts Sysonby and Secretariat and the fillies First Flight, La Prevoyante and Personal Ensign. The latter five runners are honorably mentioned and also compared in the book. As in The Greatest Horse of All: A Controversy Examined, basic statistics are used informally to provide readers a basis for their own studies in thoroughbred data comparison and evaluation. The author realizes that many people avoid mathematical ideas like the plague. Therefore, he has minimized statistical usage to its most common elements, and he explains these thoroughly for the uninitiated as the book progresses. Only two of the ten chapters use statistics to any degree. The text also includes seven figures and two tables to aid in understanding the statistical concepts. If one feels remotely comfortable with eight-grade mathematics concepts, one will have no problem with this material. Relative to the statistical comparisons, two novel concepts are discussed. These pertain to addressing the so-called era effect. Many racing fans continue to argue that horses from different eras cannot justly be compared. A strong case against this argument is presented from at least two standpoints. First, a device is described and suggested to scientifically test and compare the true relative speeds of two racing surfaces. Second, an inverse use of the well-known t test for comparing the differences between two or more data sets is presented. The text demonstrates how using this inverse test can equitably adjust earlier era data so that it may be fairly compared with later era data.
