A liberalization of economic policies has inspired considerable economic growth and encouraged the development of Burma's natural resources, but, according to David Steinberg, the current military government is akin to previous civilian governments in its commitment to socialism as a vehicle for development. The economic flexibility demonstrated by the government has not been matched by political liberalization, and as a result, economic growth remains a captive of administrative and policy constraints. Steinberg traces the origins and acceptance of socialist thought and planning in Burma and shows how socialist ideology has had to be tempered with pragmatism in order to make economic development possible. Looking to Burma's future, he also points out two central problems facing the country: strained minority relations, which have kept the nation from developing a sense of unity, and difficulties with political succession brought on by the military regime's preoccupation with perpetuating its own leadership.
Myitkyina was a vital objective in the Allied re-conquest of Burma in 1943–44. At the young age of twenty-seven, a newly ordained Franciscan priest, Father Christopher Sullivan is sent to China to teach and work in rural China to help establish missions. He describes unbelievable tales of his sacred journey and life as a missionary and transformation as a rural healer. During the Japanese invasion of China from 1940 to 1941, Father Christopher transported supplies from Rangoon to Kunming. He drove and sold trucks through the narrow, winding and mountainous highway of the Burma Road to deliver medications and supplies from the Red Cross to the missions and people in rural China. He was endearingly referred to as the "Padre of the Burma Road." After escaping death by inches on several occasions, Father Christopher Sullivan left his assignment as a Franciscan priest in China during 1941, and sought refuge in the Philippines. Irv and Mary Reiss (aka Dad and Mom) wrote this book as two letters per day for fifteen months from late 1943 through March 1945. Friends and relatives added more letters to bring the total to nearly 1,000. Virtually all of their letters ended with "I love you very very much" and "I miss you very very much." It's easy to empathize with their frustrations and anxieties about being separated and worried, especially with the birth and nurturing of their first child Stephen (aka me) in June 1944. This book title of From Burma With Love is an understatement. Irv Reiss served in the US Army from June 27, 1941 until September 17, 1945 for a total of 4 years, 2 months, and 20 days. Foreign service in India and Burma (Myanmar) was 1 year, 1 month, and 23 days. The foreign service in Burma was very intense and is the heart of this book -- hence the name, From Burma With Love. Irv was a labor officer along the Ledo Road from August 28, 1944 until December 11, 1944. His job was to hire and feed and pay several thousand native laborers (and a few elephants) to help build that road from Ledo, India to Mongyu, Burma. Read his letter of October 7, 1944.
