These are stories of eighteen strong women who daily resist the suffocation of conformity. They are fighters of their circumstances and winners, brave and determined in their refusal to accept conventional limitations and courageous in their acceptance of the consequences. For them every day is a challenge; for their relationships and social expectations conspire to encroach upon their private spaces, erode their dignity and identity. Yet rooted in their cultural milieu, they make their choices, fight for it and succeed. Much of author me era Khanna’s voluntary work is in the field of gender rights, which has perhaps honed her skill to spot the unique story of an empowered woman. Many of these stories are inspired by real life incidents and some by newspaper reports. Covering a wide social spectrum, some of these women break a stereotype with a drastic action. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Frontiers of Algorithmics Workshop, FAW 2009, held in Hefei, Anhui, China, in June 2009. The 33 revised full papers presented together with the abstracts of 3 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 87 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on graph algorithms; game theory with applications; graph theory, computational geometry; machine learning; parameterized algorithms, heuristics and analysis; approximation algorithms; as well as pattern recognition algorithms, large scale data mining.
In 1750 the Appalachian Mountains were a formidable barrier between the British colonies in the east and French territory in the west, passable only on foot or horseback. It took more than a century to break the mountain barrier and open the west to settlement. In 1751 a private Virginia company pioneered a road from Maryland to Ohio, challenging the French and Indians for the Ohio country. Several wars stalled the road, which did not start in earnest until after Ohio became a state in 1803. The stone-paved Cumberland Road--from Cumberland, Maryland, to Wheeling, Virginia--was complete by 1818 and over the next 30 years was traversed by Conestoga wagons and stagecoaches. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad--the first general purpose railroad in the world--started in Baltimore in the 1820s and reached Wheeling by 1852, uniting east and west.
The 2010 edition of the Passive and Active Measurement Conference was the 11th of a series of successful events. Since 2000, the Passive and Active M- surement (PAM) conference has provided a forum for presenting and discussing innovative and early work in the area of Internet measurements. PAM has a tradition of being a workshop-like conference with lively discussion and active participation from all attendees. This event focuses on research and practical applications of network measurement and analysis techniques. This year’s c- ference was held at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. PAM 2010 attracted 79 submissions. This book analyzes how companies and employees can endogenously, i.e., without hiring external experts or consultants, achieve competitive advantages by deviating from behavioral standards in a productive way. The study explores eight transformative behavioral innovations that shaped the development of sports and, by analogy, uses the findings to advance solutions for prevalent problems in business.
