This book is written for the benefit of the Yoruba people and others who appreciate Yoruba Traditional Religion but do not know how to go about the acquisition of knowledge pertaining to it and all African Traditional Religions. This holy book is a pointer to all the 256 Odus in the Ifa literary corpus. This book is therefore written to bridge that gap. I am quite certain that this book will be of immense benefit to whosoever reads it, for this book is an exposition to African Traditional Religions, particularly the Yoruba Traditional Religion in which Ifa occupies a pride of place. This book is recommended to all lovers of knowledge, the Yoruba Traditional Religion and Ifa.
"The sacred texts of Ifa, repository of the accumulated wisdom of countless generations of Yoruba people, are an invaluable source not only for all students of African oral literature and Yoruba civilization, but also for future generations interested in the continuing vitality of Ifa divination and a Yoruba way of life and thought." —Henry Drewal This landmark study of Ifa, the most important and elaborate system of divination of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, remains a monumental contribution to scholarship in anthropology, folklore, religion, philosophy, linguistics, and African and African-American studies.
Ifa Orisa Spirituality is an ancestral wisdom tradition steeped in nature and West African history . Isese (Ee Shay Shay) refers to tradition in Ifa spirituality and refers to the wisdom passed down from our ancestors and spiritual progenitors. Descendants from the African Diaspora displaced during the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade are seeking to return back to our indigenous nature based roots for empowerment and spiritual transformation. The Isese Workbook offers a wealth of information, personal rituals, and exercises that can be done right now to begin to tap this expansive spiritual system whether or not a mentor has been found. It will also offer new practicial tools for those who are already devotees of the tradition to deepen their understanding. The workbook is specifically designed for inner work including exercises and rites drawn from traditional practices in Africa but also embraces the evolution of that understanding to be useful and relevant for the 21st Century African Diaspora population. In the Isese Spirituality Workbook, you will learn: * About your unique spiritual anatomy and physiology based on Isese and Ifa * The power of your Ori and its influence in shaping your destiny. * The Pillars of Isese foundations in Ori, Egun, and Egbe. * The role in Iwa or Character in spiritual evolution and healing. * About Asaro meditation and how to use it to cultivate inner peace and healing. * How to cultivate a relationship with your ancestors & healing generational trauma. * About Egbe, your spiritual support system ,soul family & multidimensional worlds * The role of divination in securing answers and how to use a simple method to gain immediate direction and guidance. * Sacred verses in the Ancient Ifa literary corpus to give us timeless guidance. * Sacred technology using Ewe and easy to find items. * Frequently Asked Questions of Beginners * How to begin the practice of Isese, Ifa Orisa Spirituality in the West and more.
This book is a Contextual Reference Guide that provides a brief synopsis of the overall energy of the Odu Ifa. It has been compiled based on my in-depth research in the written literature and guidance provided by established and competent Babalawo and Awo. It is comprised of the descriptive person-hood of the Sacred verses as well as some taboos and sacrifices. This Contextual Reference Guide is in no way exhaustive and should be used coupled with information and research primarily focused on the rituals, medicines, and sacrifices of the Odu Ifa. Future publications related to this Contextual Reference Guide may include specific rituals, medicines, and sacrifices however they will come with further research and of course the guidance of well-established and competent Babalawo', Iyanifa' and Awo'. This book has been written in the hopes that it will assist those born in the western diaspora to contextualize and digest the information presented in the original texts of the sacred Scriptures of Odu Ifa. Many of us rightfully travel to Nigeria for our initiations however the Western lifestyle does not often provide the time in which it would take to study under our Elders long enough to gather a comprehensive understanding of these verses. This book is my attempt to assist us with this work. I pray that it be accepted by my Elders and respected by my colleagues in Ifa. As an American Iyanifa, it is with respect for this tradition that I have undertaken this heavy and very important task and I have not done so alone. I would like to give thanks to those Priests that have contributed their knowledge and wisdom to my work. Thank you and enjoy.
An introduction to the spiritual source of the beliefs and practices that have so profoundly shaped African American religious traditions. Most of the Africans who were enslaved and brought to the Americas were from the Yoruba nation of West Africa, an ancient and vast civilization. In the diaspora caused by the slave trade, the guiding concepts of the Yoruba spiritual tradition took root in Haiti, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil, and the United States. In this accessible introduction, Baba Ifa Karade provides an overview of the Yoruba tradition and its influence in the West. He describes the sixteen Orisha, or spirit gods, and shows us how to work with divination, use the energy centers of the body to internalize the teachings of Yoruba, and create a sacred place of worship. The book also includes prayers, dances, songs, offerings, and sacrifices to honor the Orisha.
The main odu Ika and its fifteen sub-odu's. This fully illustrated odu book is the first in a series of sixteen books. This second edition of the Ika book, contains 70 Ifa verses and their metaphysical observations. They are rendered into English and arranged in alphabetical order.
The Ifa Oracle is an ancient African divination system that has been passed down orally through the generations. Like the hexagrams of the I Ching, the odus - or stories - that comprise the oracle are consulted for their sage advice and wisdom regarding life questions. Now, for the first time, the 256 sacred stories of the Ifa Oracle have been translated into English by Dr. Afolabi Epega, a fifth-generation Nigerian babalawo, or Ifa priest. Both classic and Western interpretations by Dr. Epega and American babalawo Philip Neimark clearly illuminate each translation, setting the context for using and understanding the power of Ifa wisdom in modern life.
