The social structures of Moroccan society have been changing in accordance with western models at an ever-growing rate. The role of Islam in sharing the burden of these changes and in narrowing the ever-expanding gap between modernity and tradition is exemplified by the folk-Islamic spirit possession practices presented in this study. By adjusting their vocation to ongoing processes of commercialization and professionalization and to the changing needs and expectations of their female clientele, traditional women seers have increasingly taken on the therapeutic task of helping women to resolve the growing number of inner and interpersonal conflicts in their daily lives.
Rogo presents a history via accounts of the lives and work of those who researched the spiritistic theory of mental illness as well as of those who investigate it today. According to the spiritistic theory, some cases of psychological disorder and multiple personality may be the end result of obsession or even possession by discarnate spirits. Part 1 reviews the following cases researched by James H. Hyslop: the Thompson-Gifford case, Etta de Camp, and the Doris Fischer case. In Part 2 there is a chapter which reviews the research work of Titus Bull and Carl Wickland in which, working through a medium or a spiritualist rescue circle, obsessing or possessing spirits were contacted and attempts were made to convince them to progress spiritually and to let go their hold on the living. The third part deals with research work today, and has chapters on Kardecismo groups (Brazilian spiritistic followers of Allan Kardec) and the modern channel Matthew Bronson who is involved with a rescue circle in Northern California. There is a chapter on M. Scott Peck, who holds that some multiple personality cases are a form of demonic possession. Peck has developed a method of exorcism to deal with them. Also touched on is the work of Ralph Allison. In the next chapter Rogo considers whether or not cases of apparent possession are literally true: that is, with the questions "Do we ultimately survive death," and "Can we subsequently reach back and contact the living?" He considers the possibilities of fraud and the super-ESP hypothesis, and concludes that at least some cases of genuine spirit possession probably exist.

Demonic possession was a spiritual state that often had physical symptoms; however, in Demonic Possession and Lived Religion in Later Medieval Europe, Sari Katajala-Peltomaa argues that demonic possession was a social phenomenon which should be understood with regard to the community and culture. She focuses on significant case studies from canonization processes (c. 1240-1450) which show how each set of sources formed its own specific context, in which demonic presence derived from different motivations, reasonings, and methods of categorization. The chosen perspective is that of lived religion, which is both a thematic approach and a methodology: a focus on rituals, symbols, and gestures, as well as sensitivity to nuances and careful contextualizing of the cases are constitutive elements of the argumentation. The analysis contests the hierarchy between the 'learned' and the 'popular' within religion, as well as the existence of a strict polarity between individual and collective religious participation. In a book that sets out the prehistory of the early modern European witch craze, Nancy Caciola shows how medieval people decided whom to venerate as a saint infused with the spirit of God and whom to avoid as a demoniac possessed of an unclean spirit. This process of discrimination, known as the discernment of spirits, was central to the religious culture of Western Europe between 1200 and 1500.Since the outward manifestations of benign and malign possession were indistinguishable, a highly ambiguous set of bodily features and behaviors were carefully scrutinized by observers. Attempts to make decisions about individuals who exhibited supernatural powers were complicated by the fact that the most intense exemplars of lay spirituality were women, and the "fragile sex" was deemed especially vulnerable to the snares of the devil. Assessments of women's spirit possessions often oscillated between divine and demonic interpretations. Ultimately, although a few late medieval women visionaries achieved the prestige of canonization, many more were accused of possession by demons.Caciola analyzes a broad array of sources from saints' lives to medical treatises, exorcists' manuals to miracle accounts, to find that observers came to rely on the discernment of bodies rather than seeking to distinguish between divine and demonic possession in purely spiritual terms.
