This volume explores the unique experiences of student affairs professionals at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in the US. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are facing challenges to their continued existence on several fronts. One is fiscally, as federal funding for education has been cut and the responsibility for paying for higher education has been levied on students and parents. Another challenge is the amount of endowment dollars available to them and lastly, there are questions today as to if HBCUs are still needed in a society that has allowed African-Americans to attend Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs). The third are the challenges placed on institutions, as a whole, and specific departments, in attaining and maintain accreditation. Finally, how are administrators handling these challenges during the pandemic and their own health and well-being? This book explores journalism accreditation at HBCUs and is informed by many years of research into how journalism units have acquired and lost accreditation. During the height of the Cold War, passionate idealists across the US and Africa came together to fight for Black self-determination and the antiracist remaking of society. Beginning with the 1957 Ghanaian independence celebration, the optimism and challenges of African independence leaders were publicized to African Americans through community-based newspapers and Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Inspired by African independence—and frustrated with the slow pace of civil rights reforms in the US—a new generation of Black Power activists embarked on nonviolent direct action campaigns and built alternative institutions designed as spaces of freedom from racial subjugation. Featuring interviews with activists, extensive archival research, and media analysis, Robin Hayes reveals how Black Power and African independence activists created a diaspora underground, characterized by collaboration and reciprocal empowerment. Together, they redefined racial discrimination as an international human rights issue requiring education, sustained collective action, and global solidarity—laying the groundwork for future transnational racial justice movements, such as Black Lives Matter.
One of the primary focuses of this Committee has been to make college more affordable and accessible, so that very qualified students have the opportunity to go to college. In addition to providing low and middle-income students with some much needed financial relief when paying for college, this new law also makes an historical investment of more than a half billion dollars in historically black colleges and universities (HBCU), Hispanic-serving institutions, and other minority-serving schools. HBCUs provide critical higher education opportunities for African-American, low-income, and educationally disadvantaged Americans. Historically, HBCUs have played an especially significant role in opening the doors of college to African-American students. During times of slavery and segregation, HBCUs were the only institutions that would admit African-American students. Today, these colleges and universities play an increasing role in helping students succeed in college and in strengthening our workforce. This book highlights the work that must be done to ensure that students at HBCUs and other minority serving schools have the same opportunities as students at other colleges. This book consists of public documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.
Winner of the National Communication Association's 2018 Diamond Anniversary Book Award With the exception of slave narratives, there are few stories of black international migration in U.S. news and popular culture. This book is interested in stratified immigrant experiences, diverse black experiences, and the intersection of black and immigrant identities. Citizenship as it is commonly understood today in the public sphere is a legal issue, yet scholars have done much to move beyond this popular view and situate citizenship in the context of economic, social, and political positioning. The book shows that citizenship in all of its forms is often rhetorically, representationally, and legally negated by blackness and considers the ways that blackness, and representations of blackness, impact one’s ability to travel across national and social borders and become a citizen. This book is a story of citizenship and the ways that race, gender, and class shape national belonging, with Haiti, Cuba, and the United States as the primary sites of examination.
