This is the first attempt to synthesize current understanding of biodiversity in the great European hot spot. A diverse group of international researchers offers perspective on biodiversity at the level of the gene, species and ecosystem, including contributions on temporal change. Biological groups include plants, mammals, spiders and humans, cave-dwelling organisms, fish, aquatic invertebrates and algae.
This new edition of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera gives a taxonomic overview of the most diverse group of all organisms living in the world-largest biogeographical area. The present volume is an updated edition of the first issue in 2003 but restricted to data published before the year 2000. It contains information about 33,914 taxa (together with synonyms), and increases the number of included species and other taxa by almost 5,000. In addition, thousands of species have their distributional data completed, and their ranks, systematic positions and nomenclature corrected. Almost two hundred new acts fix systematics and nomenclature, and numerous problems are discussed. Even such well known genera as Calosoma and Carabus, or tribes as Bembidiini and Panagaeini, are completely reorganized compared to the previously published catalogues. Thus, the work is a scaffold for biotic surveys, ecological studies, and nature conservation. It responds to the urgent need of an assessment of the still remaining forms of life, threatened by the on-going destruction of habitats. Taxonomy provides the basic building blocks of our understanding of the diversity of life. It stems from innate human curiosity: confronted with an unknown species we ask first “what is it”? Taxonomists recognize species and other systematic entities (taxa), define them and place them within the framework of known organisms, providing means for their subsequent identification. In this volume 268 species of the Larentinae are covered. Many of the genera have caused serious problems in identification, but based on the larger number of specimens illustrated on the 25 colour plates, the species can now be identified much more easily. In additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to identify, differential characters are pointed out with arrows. As in the previously published volumes 1,2 and 4, maps with the European distribution are given with dots for verified specimens. There are photographs of male and female genitalia of all species and this volume also contains a systematic catalogue of the European species including those of the neighbouring regions of North Africa, Macaronesia, Turkey and the Middle East. This is the first volume including genetic information from DNA barcoding which proved to be a useful, additional tool in identification, taxonomy and species delimitation.

The present catalogue summarizes the information on species composition and distribution of ants in Bulgaria, known until 2010 from literature and museum collections. The authors have worked intensively on Bulgarian myrmecofauna for the last 10 years. The Bulgarian myrmecofauna currently comprises 163 species from 40 genera and 6 subfamilies. The species list accounts synonyms and the respective publications they were used in, as well as all known localities in Bulgaria. Known localities are grouped by geographical regions and maps with concrete localities or regions for each species are provided. The conservation status of threatened ant species is discussed. The catalogue of Bulgarian ants may be of interest to myrmecologists, ecologists, biogeographers, conservationists and any zoological library.
The second volume of the series "Biodiversity of Bulgaria" deals with both parts (Bulgarian and Greek) of the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. The book consists of three articles on the flora (1962 species of higher plants) and 45 articles on the fauna (4329 animal species, both vertebrates and invertebrates). The volume contains also zoogeographical analysis of each group, data about relicts, endemics and sites of importance for conservation. The huge amount of information is provided by more than 56 authors from Bulgaria and abroad. The book is indispensable for any zoological library, especially those collecting faunistic surveys, as well as for zoologists, biogeographers, conservationists, collectors and all lovers of nature.
Insect and disease issues are often specific to the Mediterranean forest systems rather than shared with the temperate forests. In addition to the specific native insects and diseases, the forests are subject to the invasion of exotic species. The forests are also at risk from high degrees of human activity, including changing patterns of forest fires, land management activities, intensive plantation forestry using introduced timber species from other Mediterranean climate zones, and atmospheric deposition. Combined with elements of global climate change that may disproportionately affect Mediterranean climate systems, this creates a number of significant management issues that are unique to the Mediterranean forests. It is our goal that the information contained in this volume will contribute to understanding the unique aspects of Mediterranean forest systems and to protecting these critical resources.
