Writer Helen Bailey's world fell apart in early 2011 when she and her workaholic husband took off on a well-earned break to Barbados and days after arriving Helen watched helplessly from the beach as he was dragged out to sea in a rip-current and drowned. Alone and more than three thousand miles from home, she was a wife at breakfast and a widow by lunchtime. With her life as she knew it shattered, Helen began to chronicle living after such devastating and shocking loss in a blog - Planet Grief - and gained a worldwide following from many who had experienced huge loss, whether through death or divorce. And now her blog has become a book. Anecdotal, witty, heartbreaking and utterly grounded, When Bad Things Happen to Good Bikinis covers all the obvious struggles in the aftermath of a loss, as well as many not-so-obvious but just as poignant everyday obstacles. Helen has emerged from her nightmare, and her story will bring wry humour, comfort and hope to a huge number of people, whatever their circumstances.

In 1946, as part of the Cold War arms race, the US military launched a program to test nuclear bombs in the Marshall Islands of the Pacific Ocean. From 1946 until 1958, the military detonated sixty-seven nuclear bombs over the region's Bikini and Enewetak Atolls. The twelfth bomb, called Bravo, became the world's first nuclear disaster. It sent a toxic cloud of radiation over Rongelap Atoll and other nearby inhabited islands. The testing was intended to advance scientific knowledge about nuclear bombs and radiation, but it had much more far-reaching effects. Some of the islanders suffered burns, cancers, birth defects, and other medical tragedies as a result of radiation poisoning. Many of the Marshallese were resettled on other Pacific islands or in the United States. They and their descendants cannot yet return to Bikini, which remains contaminated by radiation. And while the United States claims it is now safe to resettle Rongelap, only a few construction workers live there on a temporary basis. For Bombs over Bikini, author Connie Goldsmith researched government documents, military film footage, and other primary source documents to tell the story of the world's first nuclear disaster. You'll meet the people who planned the test operations, the Marshall Islanders who lost their homes and suffered from radiation illnesses, and those who have worked to hold the US government accountable for catastrophically poor planning. Was the new knowledge about nuclear bombs and radiation worth the cost in human suffering? You decide.
"Dangerous Zeros" (published by AuthorHouse) by John Marshall Mills is described by Blue Ink Review as a shrewd financial thriller involving myriad characters and intertwining plots that pits its main character against the forces of an abysmally corrupt financial world that holds zeros in a higher regard than the people it fleeces...’ ‘Gripping narrative’... ‘a compelling work of prose.’ In their obsessive focus on zeros, cynical bankers and politicians threaten the world’s financial systems with meltdown. This ‘knife at the throat’ is ignored by the story’s main character Jamie Gulliver, brilliantly numerate heir to his father’s high-end private bank, until Lehmann Brothers and the banking crash destroy his fortune and his future. Reluctantly, he is forced to do business with the feared founder of a shadowy international mega-business, and is sucked into a web of money-laundering, narcotics and deaths. He fights back. Mentally aided by an unlikely alter ego whose cryptic advice helps him to hang onto his sanity, he claws his way out of the pit on a journey life-changing for everyone who travels with him. When asked about the appeal of his book, Mills explains: “….the contemporary theme reflects concerns and experiences of many people facing the frightening erosion of their money, property and social values. In today’s financial world, who can you trust?” “...In Mills’ fast-paced novel, the number of zeros in your bank account dictates your popularity, but those zeros also attract the criminal element.” (Kirkus Reviews) “Mills draws drama from mistakes, missteps, and misadventures of the ‘masters of the universe’ who created the economic meltdown...” (Clarion Review)
