The primary aim of this anthology is to present in English translation and chronologically arranged representative authors who illustrate the development of this genre in Greece from the beginning of the mid-1800s to 1950. Since literature is also the product of an individual country with its own political and cultural history, it is only natural that the short story in Greece possessed its own distinct characteristics. The stories chosen for this volume, therefore, bring to the reader a greater understanding both of the Greek temperament and of its special contribution to consciousness and literature.

Professor Regueiro traces the modern poet's attempt to balance imagination and reality, his withdrawal from the external and absorption in self-consciousness, and his ultimate recognition of the temporal and the natural as the only realms where the imagination may survive. Through her study of Wordsworth, Yeats, and Stevens, she envisions the modern poet as he comes to recognize the dangers and the limits of the imagination in his dealings wit h the real world and to accept and affirm the tensions that allow poetry to exist.
Beyond Anger is a detailed literary analysis of the three poems which make up Juvenal's third book of Satires (i.e. Satires 7, 8 and 9). Dr Braund pays particular attention to the satiric techniques Juvenal employs in this book, arguing that in Book III Juvenal uses a new, ironic persona, which makes his satire more indirect, subtle and double-edged than does the angry approach found in the earlier books.

The monumental statues of Easter Island, both so magisterial and so forlorn, gazing out in their imposing rows over the island’s barren landscape, have been the source of great mystery ever since the island was first discovered by Europeans on Easter Sunday 1722. How could the ancient people who inhabited this tiny speck of land, the most remote in the vast expanse of the Pacific islands, have built such monumental works? No such astonishing numbers of massive statues are found anywhere else in the Pacific. How could the islanders possibly have moved so many multi-ton monoliths from the quarry inland, where they were carved, to their posts along the coastline? And most intriguing and vexing of all, if the island once boasted a culture developed and sophisticated enough to have produced such marvelous edifices, what happened to that culture?
