Excerpt from The Blessed Bees This record of a year's work gives the experiences and results of my beginning in a business which is to me a constant pleasure, and the source of a good income. Bee-keeping, by old methods, was believed to be ruled by chance; the bee-keeper who had good luck obtained some honey from his hives by the slaughter of his bees over the brimstone pit; the bee-keeper who had bad luck found himself, sooner or later, the owner of a beggarly array of empty hives. Bee-keeping, by modern methods, depends not upon luck but upon knowledge; it is an art just as much as growing wheat or fruit or stock; the profits which may be gained from it are just as certain as the profits from any other branch of rural labor, and are much larger. Excerpt from The Life of the Bee Certainty be known of the curious, pro found, and intimate side of its inhabi tants. Nor will this be at the cost of what still remains to be learned. I shall pass over in silence the hoary traditions that, in the country and many a book, still constitute the legend of the hive. Whenever there be doubt, disagreement, hypothesis, when I arrive at the unknown, I shall declare it loyally; you will find that we often shall halt before the un known. Beyond the appreciable facts Of their life we know but little of the bees. And the closer our acquaintance becomes, the nearer is our ignorance brought to us of the depths of their real existence; but such ignorance is better than the other kind, which is uacon scious, and satisfied. Excerpt from Bees Let us turn to the United States census figures for the year 1910. Here we shall see that bees are credited with' producing worth of honey and worth of wax in a single year. But it was possible for the census enumerators to get track of only about half the amount of the grand total. A conservative esti mate based ou reliable data shows that honeybees should be credited with not less than $2 worth of honey and beeswax. But as the average person can not comprehend what this means, suppose we load all this honey into 40-foot freight-cars holding pounds each. These cars, if placed end to end, would make a solid train over fifty miles long. So the little bee is not so little as it might at first seem. There are in the United States in the neighborhood of one mil lion persons who keep bees. There are perhaps one thousand whose annual crops run up into the carloads, and probably who make beekeeping a means of livelihood. Excerpt from The Children's Life of the Bee To this spot an aged philosopher had re tired, having become a little weary; and here he had built his refuge. His happi ness lay all in the beauties of his garden; and best-loved, and visited most Often, were the bee-hives There were twelve Of them, twelve domes of straw; and some he had painted a bright pink, and some a clear yellow, but most were a tender blue. Excerpt from The Bee People Bees and flowers belong together. We cannot understand the one without the other. For, you see, bees get their food from the flowers, and the flowers need the bees to enable them to form their seeds. The flowers that we like best have bright colored petals. The petals of a rose are, pink or white or yellow. The petals of a violet are purple, and those of a forget-me not are blue. Sometimes the petals are separate, as in a rose or a buttercup, and you can pull them off one by one. Sometimes they are all grown into one piece like the funnel - shaped flower of the morning - glory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Honey Bee It is certain, however, that the great interest taken in bees from the earliest times, and which, judging from the number of books lately published, is reviving among us with no common force, has arisen chie y from the marked resemblance which their modes of life seem to bear to those of man. Remove every fanciful theory and enthusiastic reverie, and there still remains an analogy far too curious to be satisfied with a passing glance. On the principle of nihil humani a me alienum, this ap proximation to human nature has ever made bees favourites with their masters. And theirs is no hideous mimicry of man's follies and weaknesses.
