This reprint of the original CPA Press version explores the fundamental issue of how we defend ourselves against conflict and suffering through characteristic psychological mechanisms reflected in the natal chart. Both the pathological dimensions of defences and their creative contribution to the personality are carefully explored through the zodiac signs and through the multi-levelled planetary symbols Saturn and Chiron, to reveal the many ways in which we both protect and injure ourselves when confronted with what we experience as life's threatening face. The seminar format brings complex psychological material alive in an accessible way, and ample case material highlights chracteristic human behaviour patterns. This volume is a profound revelation of the creative ways in which we can approach what may initially seem like our greatest failings.
In C. L. R. James's classic Beyond a Boundary, the sport is cricket and the scene is the colonial West Indies. Always eloquent and provocative, James--the "black Plato," (as coined by the London Times)--shows us how, in the rituals of performance and conflict on the field, we are watching not just prowess but politics and psychology at play. Part memoir of a boyhood in a black colony (by one of the founding fathers of African nationalism), part passionate celebration of an unusual and unexpected game, Beyond a Boundary raises, in a warm and witty voice, serious questions about race, class, politics, and the facts of colonial oppression. Originally published in England in 1963 and in the United States twenty years later (Pantheon, 1983), this second American edition brings back into print this prophetic statement on race and sport in society.
Discusses the development and function of African boundaries from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Beginning with the historical perspective, the book then considers the impact of boundaries on pastoralists, the use of borders as "cordons sanitaire" against diseases, and as places of refuge.
Bestselling author Erik Weihenmayer, who Jon Krakauer calls “an inspiration,” tells the epic story of his latest adventures, including solo kayaking The Colorado River.

Emotional, psychological and social situations construct a sense of values and perceptions in the process of life. The mundane situations of everyday life may not necessitate great thought, but once stressors are added, everything changes. When we are presented with unpredictable boundaries and barriers in life, the choices we make will affect the future. Physical barriers exist as steadfast challenges that provoke a change of course in overcoming the barriers. My thesis work is intended to both elicit feelings and provoke questions pertaining to these events. Consequences are judged and evaluated. I explore the events that cause change and initiate a dialogue with the viewer through the use of tangible objects. They create a duality within the sculpture by their inherent association but are ambiguous in function to elicit reflection.
Are there scientific problems that cannot be solved? Mathematics is riddled with such problems, but can we pose analogous questions outside of mathematics? Does nature itself impose fundamental limits on our knowledge of the universe? Despite the work of some of the greatest minds of the twentieth century, no one really knows. In May 1995 this profound and far-reaching concern brought together a small but select group of scientists in a remote scientific outpost in Abisko, Sweden, a village far north of the Arctic Circle. Boundaries and Barriers captures the spirit—and the content—of the talks given at the meeting. Included are contributions by John Barrow on the limits of science, John Casti on the search for the “unknowable” in science, James Hartle on quantum cosmology, Harold Morowitz on complexity and epistemology, and six more fascinating chapters that illuminate the possible limits to what we can know by using the tools of science. The issues discussed here challenge the very foundations of science, but the conclusions are optimistic. When the dust clears, science remains standing-our best bet for understanding the way the world works.
"Unconditional Boundaries" is a revolutionary guide that redefines the concept of personal and relationship boundaries. This book introduces the transformative framework of 'Unconditional Boundaries.' It's an insightful exploration into crafting meaningful relationships and fostering deep connections while maintaining one's authenticity and protecting emotional well-being. At the heart of this work lies the concept of Unconditional Boundaries, a dual framework comprising 'Bridges' and 'Barriers, ' that offers a new perspective on how we connect with others. 'Bridges' are offered as tools for sharing our values and desires, inviting people into our lives who resonate with our authentic selves. In contrast, 'Barriers' are presented as the defenses that maintain distance from those whose values clash with ours. "Unconditional Boundaries" is a paradigm shift in interpersonal dynamics. Each chapter of the book is carefully crafted to take the reader through various aspects of building and implementing these boundaries. The examples peppered throughout the book, provide relatable scenarios, demonstrating how to apply these principles in different relationship contexts, including romantic, family, and work relationships. What sets "Unconditional Boundaries" apart is its emphasis on building authentic connections over resolving conflicts, focusing on aligning with those who share our values instead of forcing those who don't to change or leave. It challenges traditional notions of boundaries that highlight our differences, replacing them with a holistic approach that builds deeper connections through looking at the values we share. Ideal for people yearning for deeper, more fulfilling relationships, this book is a beacon for those aspiring to cultivate deeper, more authentic connections while staying true to themselves. Embrace the journey of mastering Unconditional Boundaries and transform your relationships into sources of joy, fulfillment, and true belonging.
