Je la definirais, pour moi, celle des nations illettrees: poesie essentiellement orale, faite par tout le monde et pour tout le monde. Beaucoup de nations n'en ont jamais eu d'autre, celles surtout a qui, avec l'independance prematurement perdue, le developpement politique a manque. Mais quand la poesie savante ou ecrite nait, l'heure du declin a sonne pour sa s ur ainee; celle-ci ne s'accommode point de la culture, pas plus qu'une violette sauvage, transplantee dans un jardin, n'y prospere et ne s'acclimate. Sa destinee ordinaire est alors d'etre vouee a l'abandon, a l'oubli; la paysanne qui a pris des habits de ville, l'ecolier devenu adolescent, ne jettent pas un il plus dedaigneux sur les beaux atours d'autrefois ou sur les jouets de l'enfance, qu'un peuple, entrant dans l'age viril, sur l'art trop simple, lui parait-il maintenant, qui jadis faisait ses uniques delices. Pour les etrangers, cependant, cette poesie entachee, dans son pays natal, de vulgarite, possede plus d'un genre d'interet.
