This volume contains the proceedings of a conference in honor of Goro Azumaya's seventieth birthday, held at Indiana University of Bloomington in May 1990. Professor Azumaya, who has been on the faculty of Indiana University since 1968, has made many important contributions to modern abstract algebra. His introduction and investigation of what have come to be known as Azumaya algebras subsequently stimulated much research on such rings and algebras, as well as applications to geometry and number theory. In addition to honoring Professor Azumaya's contributions, the conference was intended to stimulate interaction among three areas of his research interests; Azumaya algebras, group and Hopf algebra actions, and module theory. Aimed at researchers in algebra, this volume contains contributions by some of the leaders in these areas.
Module theory over commutative asociative rings is usually extended to noncommutative associative rings by introducing the category of left (or right) modules. An alternative to this procedure is suggested by considering bimodules. A refined module theory for associative rings is used to investigate the bimodule structure of arbitary algebras and group actions on these algebras.
Presenting an introduction to the theory of Hopf algebras, the authors also discuss some important aspects of the theory of Lie algebras. This book includes a chapters on the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, the Hopf algebra of representations of the symmetric groups, the Hopf algebras of the nonsymmetric and quasisymmetric functions, and the Hopf algebra of permutations.
In the mid-1960's, several Italian mathematicians began to study the connections between classical arguments in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, and the contemporaneous development of algebraic K-theory in the US. These connections were exemplified by the work of Andreotti-Bombieri, Salmon, and Traverso on seminormality, and by Bass-Murthy on the Picard groups of polynomial rings. Interactions proceeded far beyond this initial point to encompass Chow groups of singular varieties, complete intersections, and applications of K-theory to arithmetic and real geometry. This volume contains the proceedings from a US-Italy Joint Summer Seminar, which focused on this circle of ideas. The conference, held in June 1989 in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, was supported jointly by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche and the National Science Foundation. The book contains contributions from some of the leading experts in this area.

Wolfgang Doeblin, one of the greatest probabilists of this century, died in action during World War II at the age of twenty-five. He left behind several seminal contributions which have profoundly influenced the field and continue to provide inspiration for current research. This book is based on papers presented at the conference, `Fifty Years after Doeblin: Developments in the Theory of Markov Chains, Markov Processes, and Sums of Random Variables', held at Blaubeuren, Germany, in November 1991. Presented here for the first time is an account of Doeblin's life and work, revealing the circumstances of his tragic death in 1940. Organized into sections according to topic, the papers describe both Doeblin's original contributions as well as current developments. With contributions by top probabilists from sixteen countries, this book will interest both researchers in probability and science historians.
There is an apparent trend towards geometrization of physical theories. During the last 20 years, the most successful mathematical models for the description and understanding of physical systems have been based on the Lie theory in its widest sense and various generalizations, for example, deformations of it.This proceedings volume reflects part of the development. On the mathematical side, they report on representations of Lie algebras, quantization procedures, non-commutative geometry, quantum groups, etc. Furthermore, possible physical applications of these techniques are discussed (e.g. quantization of classical systems, derivations of evolution equations, discrete and deformed physical systems).This volume complements the book Generalized Symmetries in Physics, published by World Scientific in 1994.
This volume is based on lectures on division algebras given at a conference held at Colorado State University. Although division algebras are a very classical object, this book presents this "classical" material in a new way, highlighting current approaches and new theorems, and illuminating the connections with a variety of areas in mathematics.
