Recipient is possibly the actor Henry Irving. Discusses an Ophelia scene in Hamlet.
Expresses interest in arranging a meeting and mentions that he is "very busy now on Becket."
One of the printed cards is an invitation to a testimonial for Henry Irving, sent by G. Fred Bashford; and the other card is an invitation sent by J. Hurst to the opening performance at the Lyceum Theatre, December 30, 1878.
Possibly written to William Winter. The date of the banquet for Mr. [Henry?] Irving at Delmonico's was April 6th, 1885. Asks if he sent the Italian edition of Shakespeare to him or the "chief" since he has been unable to obtain it from the housekeeper.
Declines an invitation for that evening, but on behalf of Henry Irving (Terry's leading man) she invites Bernhardt to dinner after the play and tells her to bring some friends. Terry also thanks Bernhardt for sending her one of her own gowns.
In (1), on letterhead of Brevoort House, addressed "My dear Winter," and signed "Harry Loveday," Loveday tells Winter that he looks forward to their visit. (2), on letterhead of the Hotel Navarre and addressed "My dear Willie," mentions that he will be sailing a week earlier than expected. In reference to an enclosure no longer with the letter, Loveday says "the enclosed is a most impudent fabrication, the cheif [sic] has never even seen the lady - or ever heard of her - or I either."
Requests two tickets for an upcoming performance by Henry Irving.
