Sothern emphatically informs Winter that he is not offended. He has been very ill and had to take time off for rest which has disrupted his plans.

Sothern must postpone Sunday's dinner because his eldest brother is ill.

Willard declines an invitation to go to Staten Island because of lack of time before he goes back to England.
