The Festschrift Eugen Karl Kempf is a proceedings volume of the 15th International German Ostracodologists’ Meeting which was held October 11th to 14th, 2012 by the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the University of Cologne. The selected contributions cover a broad range of biological and palaeontological topics that rely on sound taxonomy and serve as a tribute to the Kempf Database of Ostracoda including a biography on Eugen Karl Kempf. In detail, the scientific contributions are covering freshwater and marine genera/species and the parasitic family Entocytherids. Revisions of genera and descriptions of new species are one focus, but also new studies on biogeography, ecology and morphology add to the value of the proceeding. The Biology of Crustacea
This book provides an introduction to the study of the ostracods that are common inhabitants of intertidal rock- pools, estuaries and other coastal habitats around Great Britain. It is the first comprehensive treatment of the British marine and brackish-water ostracod fauna to be published since the last century. The first part deals with the general morphology of the Ostracoda, their ecology, reproduction and life histories, and includes keys to the higher taxa as well as to 49 genera. Practical methods for the collection and study of ostracods are described in detail. The second part contains keys and notes for the identification of 116 species from British waters; for each there is a brief synonymy and description together with notes on its taxonomy, ecology and distribution, and drawings of shells and appendages. Additionally, shells of 76 of the species are illustrated by means of scanning electron micrographs. This book holds a general appeal for students of both fossil and living ostracods in all parts of the world. It will be useful to those investigating marine and brackish- water meiofauna, of which ostracods are often a major constituent.
Paleolimnology is a rapidly developing science that is now being used to study a suite of environmental and ecological problems. This volume is the fourth handbook in the Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research book series. The first volume (Last & Smol, 2001a) examined the acquisition and archiving of sediment cores, chronological techniques, and large-scale basin analysis methods. Volume 2 (Last & Smol, 2001b) focused on physical and chemical methods. Volume 3 (Smol et al. , 2001), along with this book, summarize the many biological methods and techniques that are available to study long-term environmental changeusing information preserved in sedimentary profiles. A subsequent volume (Birks et al. , in preparation) will deal with statistical and data handling procedures. It is our intent that these books will provide sufficient detail and breadth to be useful handbooks for both seasoned practitioners as well as newcomers to the area of paleolimnology. These books will also hopefully be useful to non-paleolimnologists (e. g. , limnologists, archeologists, palynologists, geographers, geologists, etc. ) who continue to hear and read about pal- limnology, but have little chance to explore the vast and sometimes difficult to access journal-based reference material for this rapidly expanding field. Although the chapters in these volumes target mainly lacustrine settings, many of the techniques described can also be readily applied to fluvial, glacial, marine, estuarine, and peatland environments. This current volume focuses on zoological indicators preserved in lake sediments, whilst Volume 3 focused on terrestrial, algal, and siliceous indicators.
