Ashtavakra Gita is the most instructive spiritual text ever written and should be read and re-read by any sincere seeker of Self-Realization. It gets to the heart of Truth and True Nature more directly and concisely than anything else I've encountered, and I agree with its last words: "No more can be said." I call this the "bootleg version" because a PDF of my first draft of this translation, which I gave to a small group of friends, made its way onto the internet and subsequently was downloaded and read by a sizeable number of people, judging by the emails I've received thanking me for doing it, or requesting permission to translate it into their language-despite having no contact information in the PDF. Several years later I included a slightly revised version in my book, The Perennial Way, which judging by book sales has not reached nearly the same number of people. And so I thought I'd publish the original version separately as a paperback and e-book, on the theory that maybe it had its own mojo for some reason, and might find its way into the hands of a few folks who have not otherwise encountered it. The Translator's Preface and Introduction are also from the original viral PDF.
The Ashtavakra Gita, or the Ashtavakra Samhita as it is sometimes called, is a very ancient Sanskrit text. Nothing seems to be known about the author, though tradition ascribes it to the sage Ashtavakra; hence the name. There is little doubt though that it is very old, probably dating back to the days of the classic Vedanta period. The Sanskrit style and the doctrine expressed would seem to warrant this assessment. The work was known, appreciated and quoted by Ramakrishna and his disciple Vivekananda, as well as by Ramana Maharshi, while Radha­krishnan always refers to it with great respect. Apart from that the work speaks for itself. It presents the traditional teachings of Advaita Vedanta with a clarity and power very rarely matched. The Reverend John Henry Richards, MA, BD, was an Anglican priest born in 1934 who was ordained a deacon in Llandaff in 1977 and a priest there in 1978. He served in Maesteg, Cardiff, Penmark, and Stackpile Elidor until his retirement in 1999, and died in 2017. He is known for his English translations of the Ashtavakra Gita, the Dhammapada, and the Vivekachudamani, which he put in the public domain and distributed on the Internet in 1994. The text used here is the one revised in 1996.
There is a fundamental discrepancy between man as he is and man as he could be, if only he recognized his true being and purpose. Schaefer's second volume deals with concrete values - the virtues, divine commandments and principles of social ethics from a Bah ' perspective.
While the Bhagavad Gītā is an acknowledged treasure of world spiritual literature, few people know a parallel text, theĪśvara Gītā. This lesser-known work is also dedicated to a god, but in this case it is Śiva, rather than Kṛṣṇa, who is depicted as the omniscient creator of the world. Andrew J. Nicholson's Lord Śiva's Song makes this text available in English in an accessible new translation. A work of both poetry and philosophy, the Īśvara Gītā builds on the insights of Patañjali's Yoga Sūtra and foreshadows later developments in tantric yoga. It deals with the pluralistic religious environment of early medieval India through an exploration of the relationship between the gods Śiva and Viṣṇu. The work condemns sectarianism and violence and provides a strategy for accommodating conflicting religious claims in its own day and in our own.

This is a book about spiritual enlightenment-what it is, how it happened for me, and how you might live in such a way that it could happen for you. Few undertakings are more pretentious than writing about Absolute Truth and the "path" to it. For starters, positioning oneself as an authority on the subject is obscenely audacious, and takes a lot of chutzpah. Second, words cannot touch it, so no matter how well you might be able to choose and order yours, the end result will fall so far short of the mark it may as well be an outright lie. And yet, to have something informed to say about Truth and not speak it is almost impossible. To have True Nature reveal Itself to Itself in "your" presence is the greatest gift anyone could ever receive, and leaves you wishing that gift be given to everyone. In the memoir portion of this book, I've tried to focus on stories and life passages I feel in some way may have contributed to my Realization, or to my perspective now, sixteen years later. The last chapters are pretty much straight up "teachings" aimed at helping seekers on their own paths to Realization, and are the raison d'etre for this book at all. The memoir portion mainly serves as a way to get to know who you're listening to if you make it to the latter part, but hopefully it also provides an entertaining read.The things I say about spiritual matters are not intended to inform your mind and bring understanding. They are Trojan horses aimed at destroying all that. I'm not interested in saying things satisfying to the intellect. I'm interested in saying things that might weaken your fascination with a false reality, that might put your mind on shaky ground, that might make you vulnerable to Grace.My actual purpose is to arrange my words in such a way as to cause your mind to collapse in on itself, and there are numerous phrases and passages within this book capable of doing that. Your life, too, is filled with myriad invitations to "Know Thyself." When you are ready-when you have the capacity to receive-the thought that stops the mind will happen and transmission will occur. This is my deepest wish for you, but only if you wish it for yourself.
