Situated in the very heart of Pennsylvania, Blair County is bounded on the west by the formidable Allegheny Mountains. It was this natural barrier that stalled westward migration and encouraged early settlers to farm its lush, fertile valleys prior to the American Revolution. Carved out of Bedford and Huntingdon Counties in 1846, Blair County was home to many iron furnaces in the 1800s and was on the chosen path of the great Pennsylvania Canal. However, it was the Pennsylvania Railroad that utilized Blair County as its base of operations, thus creating a unique transportation-based economy. Today, Blair County is bisected by Interstate 99. This highway, which parallels a great Native American path, provides travelers with views of some of the loftiest mountains and the most picturesque scenery of the state.
Blair County is a picturesque area of five hundred thirty square miles, carved from the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in western Pennsylvania. Its lush forests, fertile valleys, and exquisite vistas attracted settlers as early as the mid-1700s. Its rich supply of minerals-iron, lead, and limestone-prompted the development of furnaces, forges, mills, and quarries; during the nineteenth century, the manufacture of iron was the principal business of the county.Illustrated with more than two hundred images, Around Blair County includes all the charm of the hamlets and towns it highlights: Hollidaysburg, Duncansville, Newry, Tyrone, Bellwood, Claysburg, Roaring Spring, Martinsburg, and Williamsburg. It explains how Duncansville emerged as an antiques mecca, and it celebrates the still preserved Mount Etna iron furnace. It features well-known and lesser-known people from the area, such as steel man Charles Schwab, musician and inventor Fred Waring, and lamplighter Homer Butler.
Many people, when they are young often are quoted as saying, "I can't do anything in this town" when talking about their hometown. They Came From Blair County proves this theory wrong time and time again. It shows that no matter where you are from you can do whatever you set your mind to. It features thirty-one people from a variety of backgrounds in different fields including entertainment, politics, business, medicine, and sports among others. It shows how they set their goals and then proceeded to accomplish them. Not only do their stories talk about their accomplishments, but it shows how they affected their hometowns and eventually made history. This local history lesson will bring many memories to the older generation and will teach the younger ones that their home communities are something to be proud of and they too can accomplish great things.
