Excerpt from Army of Northern Virginia Memorial Volume If any apology were needed for this volume, it could be found in the frequently expressed desire of comrades in different sections of the country to possess in permanent form the matter herein contained, and in the unanimous and hearty vote by which, at its annual reunion in October, 1878, the Virginia Division, Army of Northern Virginia Association, requested me to prepare it. The addresses will be found very important contributions to the material for a future history of the Army of Northern Virginia; and it is hoped that the Roster and Statement of Relative Numbers will be found of interest and value. The volume has been delayed by circumstances over which I had no control, but I feel sure that subscribers will consider the delay amply atoned for in its enabling me to add to the matter originally promised General Fitz. Lee's address on Chancellorsville. The book is sent forth in the full confidence that it will prove an acceptable offering to those who prize the honor of belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia, to our brothers of the other armies of the Confederacy, to friends of our cause everywhere, and even to brave men who fought against us but are willing to admit that they had "foemen worthy of their steel."
