Baumschlager Eberle Berlin (BE Berlin) was founded in 2010 by Dietmar Eberle and Gerd Jäger with a very specific mission. In its early years, this renowned architecture firm designed global competition bids for Baumschlager Eberle. As a result of its successes, especially in residential architecture in and around Berlin, the Berlin office increasingly also took on the work of implementation planning. The guiding maxim of BE Berlin has always been to focus on projects that will stand the test of time. This dovetails with Dietmar Eberle’s motto of building for everyday life. This book addresses the highly differentiated spatial, social, cultural and demographic structure(s) of Germany, with a particular focus on the reciprocal relations between different levels of spatial development. The historical development of Germany serves as a background in order to provide context for the development of spatially relevant ideas and ideals (whether in relation to politics, landscape, or culture). In this regard, questions of divergence and convergence become highly salient. The book makes the complexity of spatial and social developments in Germany comprehensible. The neopragmatic approach adopted here allows bringing together different theoretical strands while providing a basis for independent regional geographic research at the same time. Beginning with an overview of the physical structures of Germany which provides the material point of departure for the societal development of Germany, key aspects of the German history are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the reciprocal influence between material substrate and notions of landscape. Here, specific ‘German’ trajectories of aesthetic and normative conceptions of landscape become clear. A common theme throughout the book are questions of divergence and of efforts towards convergence, which become evident when considering past and present economic, political, and demographic developments. Efforts to tackle current challenges, such as adapting to climate change and mitigating it, or securing raw materials, also become apparent. The complexity of spatial processes in Germany is illustrated in case study regions dealing with the challenges of structural change in traditional industrial regions (such as the Ruhr area), or e.g. efforts of Berlin to position and find itself as the capital of a unified Germany. Overall, the book shows how theory-driven regional geographic research can make spatiotemporal complexities tangible and comprehensible.
The URA periodical is an annual open-access publication, which will accompany the Sino-German research and development project Urban-Rural Assembly (URA,01LE1804A-D), sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the FONA program Sustainable Development of Urban Regions (NUR). By combining scientific and essayistic writings, photographic works, and/or ethnographic studies including interviews, spatial mappings and drawings, the URA periodical will seek to bridge academic, practice and policy discourses around global sustainability challenges and integrated planning and governance approaches at the urban-rural interface. Der URA Sammelband ist eine jährliche Open-Access Publikation, die im Rahmen des deutsch-chinesischen Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojektes Urban-Rural-Assembly (URA) herausgegeben wird. Quirino De Giorgio (1907-1997) is among the few Italian architects whose careers represents the entirety of the twentieth century: from futurism through fascism to the experimentations linked to the invention of reinforced concrete. Too often remembered exclusively for his early futurist and fascist works, De Giorgio is an architect whose production continued, until his last years, to develop in the experimental and dynamic way which had characterized its beginnings. Quirino De Giorgio: An Architects Legacy, the first English-language book dedicated to the Italian architect, is a constellation of his surviving buildings shown through the eyes of photographer Enrico Rizzato. In Rizzato's pictures, each one of the ninety surviving works will showcase the universality of De Giorgio's projects and the transformations that time has stamped on his creations, taking the reader on a voyage across the different facets of Italian architecture. Accompanying site plans, floorplans and sections provide deeper insight into De Giorgio's spatial, structural, urban, and landscaping inventions. An opening essay will introduce the reader to the still relatively unknown method and life of this highly original yet still too little known architect. The book also includes a full list of De Giorgio's works that has been reconstructed here for the first time through extensive archival work.
Studio environments can be defined as multi-dimensional integrated production spaces where basic design trainings take place and where design issues including theoretical notions such as sociological, political, phenomenological, and other dimensions are discussed. Present approaches within the literature and social media on this topic gives cause for students to evaluate their future professions over finished and pictorial products rather than ontological and processual means. While there are many resources available on the present approaches of aesthetics and visuality of interior spaces, there is not much research available on new design methodologies, related design processes, and new applied methods in interior arcitecture. Based on different contexts, these methods of design practice have the potential to enrich design processes and create multiple discussion platforms within project studios as well as other design media. These different representations and narration methods for research in the context of interior architecture can be effectively used in design processes. The Handbook of Research on Methodologies for Design and Production Practices in Interior Architecture proposes new design methodologies and related design processes and introduces new applied method approaches while presenting alternative methods that have been used within design studios in the field of interior architecture. The chapters deal with four major sections: the design process and interdiciplinary approaches; then scenario development and content; followed by material, texture, and atmosphere; and concluding with new approaches to design. Diversity of Belonging in Europe analyzes conflicting notions of identity and belonging in contemporary Europe. Addressing the creation, negotiation, and (re) use of diverse spaces and places of belonging, the book examines their fascinating complexities in the context of a changing Europe. Susannah Eckersley is Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University, UK, an Associated Research Fellow at the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History (ZZF) in Potsdam, Germany, and the Project Leader of en/counter/points – a collaborative European research project on public spaces and belonging funded by HERA. Her expertise is in memory, museums, difficult heritage, migration, identities, and belonging. Claske Vos is an anthropologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of European Studies at the Humanities Faculty of the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her current work focuses on the intersection of EU funding, cultural activism, and enlargement. While Mies van der Rohe’s pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona in 1929 went unnoticed by most of the visitors to the fairgrounds, contemporary critics enthusiastically hailed it as the most convincing statement of the Modern Age.
