This is a reprinting of a book first published in 1907. The book tells the story of one of America's foremost engineers, and three of his companions, who made a 14-day horseback trip that covered 400 miles of mountainous mining regions of southwestern Colorado in 1902. The narrative includes descriptions of the general geology, mining and millilng methods, ore bodies, aerial tram operations, history and production of many of the mines along the route. Includes numerous drawings and photographs. (lag).
Excerpt from Across the San Juan Mountains On a superb morning in September, that month of many colors, four of us1 started on a ride among the min ing districts of the San Juan, in southwestern Colorado. The starting point was Ouray, the picturesque little town named after the old chief, an Indian of renown, the friend of the white men who first explored the mountain fast nesses of the Uncompahgre. From Ouray we rode across the ranges to T'elluride, Silverton, Lake City, Gunnison, and thence to Crested Butte and back, following a course which, on the map, looks like a figure 8, with Ouray at the base of the lower loop and Crested Butte at the top. See map. The distance was slightly over 400 miles; the country traversed is beautiful to the traveler and interest ing to the mining engineer, so that the experience was sufficiently rich in incidents and information to warrant the account which it is my purpose to present. Excerpt from Pioneering in the San Juan: Personal Reminiscences of Work Done in Southwestern Colorado During the "Great San Juan Excitement" In this age of electricity, when men think quick, live fast and die young as a general rule, reminis cences are below par. Men prefer to look forward rather than backward. And yet we believe that it is well, at times, to take a look at the past, that we may see what progress Christianity has made in Colorado.
