Excerpt from Apostolic Hymns and Songs: A Collection of Hymns and Songs, Both New and Old, for the Church, Protracted Meetings, and the Sunday Schools Apostolic Hymns and Songs has been prepared with the idea of presenting the Apostolic teaching, the Gospel, with all its facts, commands, and promises, in song, in such a manner that "sense and sound" may go together. Especial attention has been given to the adaptation of hymns and songs for protracted and social meetings that the whole congregation can sing, and the effort has been made to utilize the singing of the Sunday-school in the church, the author regarding it as a great mistake to make a distinction between church and Sunday-school music. The time to teach the plain, grand old melodies is in childhood, that in all after years the songs of childhood may be the songs of age, which can never be done with the "hop, skip and jump" music that is evanescent in its character and not adapted to congregational singing. Consequently many of the old melodies, those that have stood the test of public judgment, have been selected in preference to new ones. At the same time, a sufficient number of new hymns and songs have been prepared to give variety and interest in the work to those who desire something new, and the author flatters himself that many of them will meet with a hearty reception by those who appreciate pure, sweet, and scriptural songs. The department of music and harmony has been under the supervision of Prof. Z. M. Parvin, whose reputation as a composer and harmonist is a sufficient guarantee that this part of the work is well done. Credit has been given in the proper place to the authors of both words and music, as far as possible; and to the many friends who have contributed to these pages, we desire to express our thanks.
