Excerpt: ...6A and 6B During the second term the following tets were prepared by the principals and given from this office: Spelling in grades 4A-7B History in grades 4R-7B Geography in grades 4A-7B Arithmetic in grades 4A-7B It might be asked, "Why were these tests given when standard tests in many subjects are available?" With the frequent revisions in the course of study and also because of the fad that a number of our outlines are in mimeographed form it was desired' to get the principals to make a careful study of what constitutes the present course of tudy. The giving of these tests showed that in at least four schools out-of-date outlines were being followed in one or more subjects. All these tests were given under the immediate supervision of the principals, and since it is desirable for the principal to frequently test the pupils in his school Ibis method was adopted to impress upon him the importance of this phase of his supervisory duties. The teachers were greatly interested in the comparative standing of their classes on these tests and were undoubtedly stimulated to greater efforts. The results on these tests indicate that our grammar grade teachers need to pay more attention to what might be termed the minimum essentials of knowledge in the fundamental subjects. It was frequently acknowledged by principals and teachers that more attention must be paid to summaries and drills after the children have worked out the problems used in the development of the several divisions of a course of study. STANDARD TESTS The Richmond City Standard Arithmetic Tests in the fundamental operations in whole numbers were given in grades 5A-7B in October, 1919, and in grades 4B. 5B and 6B in May, 1920.
