The amount was which was apportioned upon scholars, at the rate of 41 cents per scholar, the same as in 1875 and in 1876. The distribution by counties is given in Table N O. 1. The number of districts reported as purchasing text-books under chapter 315, laws of 1875, is 453, an increase of 186 during the year. Of the whole number, 244 loan the books to the pupils, and 170 sell them. The plan Of purchase by the district is evidently growing in favor.
