Working the System offers key insights into the politics of the everyday in twenty-first-century dominant party and neo-authoritarian regimes in Africa and elsewhere. Detailing the many ways ordinary Angolans fashion their relationships with the system—an emic notion of their current political and socioeconomic environment—Jon Schubert explores what it means and how it feels to be part of the contemporary Angolan polity. Schubert finds that for many ordinary Angolans, the benefits of the post-conflict "New Angola," flush with oil wealth and in the midst of a construction boom, are few. The majority of the inhabitants of the capital, Luanda, struggle to make ends meet and live on under $2.00 per day. The "New Angola" as promoted by the ruling MPLA, Schubert contends, is an essentially urban, upwardly mobile, and aspirational project, premised on the acceptance of the regime’s political and economic dominance by its citizens. In the first ethnography of Angola to be published since the end of that country’s twenty-seven years of intermittent violent internal conflict in 2002, Schubert traces how Angolans may question and resist the system within an atmosphere of apparent compliance. Working the System will appeal to anthropologists and political scientists, urban sociologists, and scholars of African studies.
This book examines the internal politics of the war that divided Angola for more than a quarter-century after independence. In contrast to earlier studies, its emphasis is on Angolan people's relationship to the rival political forces that prevented the development of a united nation. Pearce's argument is based on original interviews with farmers and town dwellers, soldiers and politicians in Central Angola. He uses these to examine the ideologies about nation and state that elites deployed in pursuit of hegemony, and traces how people responded to these efforts at politicisation. The material presented here demonstrates the power of the ideas of state and nation in shaping perceptions of self-interest and determining political loyalty. Yet the book also shows how political allegiances could and did change in response to the experience of military force. In so doing, it brings the Angolan case to the centre of debates on conflict in post-colonial Africa.
Angolan Political Thought introduces anticolonial thinkers whose writings on colonialism and liberation have been instrumental in the formation of Angolan identity. It focuses on the political nature of these thinkers and how their work has impacted Angolan political reality. Luís Cordeiro-Rodrigues both introduces and critically analyzes the thought of Queen Njinga, Mário Pinto de Andrade, Agostinho Neto and Pepetela and systematically addresses five important topics in Angolan political thought. Firstly, it gives a general introduction to African political philosophy and explains the place of Angolan political thought in this. Secondly, it explains how different Angolan thinkers have conceptualized colonialism and its effects on the global Black community. Thirdly, the book surveys what key Angolan thinkers have identified as legitimate and effective tools of liberation and resistance from colonialism. For example, it addresses the place of poetry for liberation, as well as the justification for war against colonial powers. Fourth, this book will explain the different theories that Africa and, in particular, African identity, consists of. Finally, it will look at Angolan theories of distributive justice and compensation for historical injustices.
Michael Barr explores the complex and covert networks of power at work in one of the world's most prosperous countries - the city-state of Singapore. He argues that the contemporary networks of power are a deliberate project initiated and managed by Lee Kuan Yew - former prime minister and Singapore's 'founding father' - designed to empower himself and his family. African liberation is often seen in terms of heroism, but seldom in terms of thought. From Water to Wine explores how Angola has changed since the end of its civil war in 2002. Its focus is the middle class - defined in the book as those with a house, a car, and an education - and their consumption, aspirations, and hopes for their families. It is a book that takes as its starting point 'what is working in Angola?' rather than 'what is going wrong?' and makes a deliberate, political choice to give attention to beauty and happiness in everyday life in a country that has had an unusually troubled history. The book is uniquely structured: each chapter focuses on one of the five senses (smell, touch, taste, hearing, and sight, respectively) with the introduction and conclusion provoking reflection on proprioception (kinesthesia) and empathy respectively. A variety of media are employed - poetry, recipes, photos, comics, and other textual experiments - to engage readers and the senses. Angola has made enormous progress in the nine years since the end of its civil war. It is today one of Africa's wealthiest nations in terms of natural resources, and it is an emerging regional power in Africa. A key uncertainty is about Dos Santos' succession plans. Given the dominance of the MPLA, a disorderly transition could usher in a short period of uncertainty. This process could begin in 2012, following an inevitable MPLA victory in the legislative elections. More threatening are external shocks, especially a collapse in oil prices, because stability in the near term requires using oil rents to pay for goods, services, and patronage to offset rampant poverty and withstand the strain of a rapidly expanding urbanized population. Urban poverty remains Angola's biggest challenge, and it should be a key focus of U.S. development and governance efforts.
