As an author and a Systems Consultant, I am excited about the draft diagrammatical techniques described in this book. They are proving their worth in a troublesome area of systematic data processing: the analysis/definition of what a new or a converted system should do if it is to be of most value to the people who are paying for it. In writing this book, the author distinguishes the work of analysis (defining what the system 'will' do) from the work of design (defining 'how' it will do it), recognising that analysts often design and designers often do analysis. The author's idea of using draft hand drawn diagrams during the initial design of every stage of the system development is what is actually included in this book. All the examples of the diagrams shown are hand written. The system and its diagrams are based on a system developed by the author for a corporation. The discipline consists of an evolving set of techniques which have grown out of the success of structured analysis and the use of diagrams.
The trendsetting architect Rem Koolhaas has carried it out to perfection, whereas the next generation of international stars refined it even more, giving us the unconventional presentation of designs and ideas in the form of diagrams. This method of presentation is easy to understand when dealing with the client and can be communicated internationally, beyond language and cultural barriers - a product of our globalised world. However, diagrams are now much more than explanations and form their own discipline in creative professions connected to design and construction. What looks simple is in fact a complex matter. This title in the series Construction and Design Manual is in its second edition and assembles 384 pages of diagrams by avant-garde architects and designers who specialise in public space, landscape architecture and urban planning.
Recent advances in science and technology have made modern computing and engineering systems more powerful and sophisticated than ever. The increasing complexity and scale imply that system reliability problems not only continue to be a challenge but also require more efficient models and solutions. This is the first book systematically covering the state-of-the-art binary decision diagrams and their extended models, which can provide efficient and exact solutions to reliability analysis of large and complex systems. The book provides both basic concepts and detailed algorithms for modelling and evaluating reliability of a wide range of complex systems, such as multi-state systems, phased-mission systems, fault-tolerant systems with imperfect fault coverage, systems with common-cause failures, systems with disjoint failures, and systems with functional dependent failures. These types of systems abound in safety-critical or mission-critical applications such as aerospace, circuits, power systems, medical systems, telecommunication systems, transmission systems, traffic light systems, data storage systems, and etc. The book provides both small-scale illustrative examples and large-scale benchmark examples to demonstrate broad applications and advantages of different decision diagrams based methods for complex system reliability analysis. Other measures including component importance and failure frequency are also covered. A rich set of references is cited in the book, providing helpful resources for readers to pursue further research and study of the topics. The target audience of the book is reliability and safety engineers or researchers. The book can serve as a textbook on system reliability analysis. It can also serve as a tutorial and reference book on decision diagrams, multi-state systems, phased-mission systems, and imperfect fault coverage models.

The leading guide to real-time systems design-revised and updated This third edition of Phillip Laplante's bestselling, practical guide to building real-time systems maintains its predecessors' unique holistic, systems-based approach devised to help engineers write problem-solving software. Dr. Laplante incorporates a survey of related technologies and their histories, complete with time-saving practical tips, hands-on instructions, C code, and insights into decreasing ramp-up times. Real-Time Systems Design and Analysis, Third Edition is essential for students and practicing software engineers who want improved designs, faster computation, and ultimate cost savings. Chapters discuss hardware considerations and software requirements, software systems design, the software production process, performance estimation and optimization, and engineering considerations. This new edition has been revised to include: * Up-to-date information on object-oriented technologies for real-time including object-oriented analysis, design, and languages such as Java, C++, and C# * Coverage of significant developments in the field, such as: New life-cycle methodologies and advanced programming practices for real-time, including Agile methodologies Analysis techniques for commercial real-time operating system technology Hardware advances, including field-programmable gate arrays and memory technology * Deeper coverage of: Scheduling and rate-monotonic theories Synchronization and communication techniques Software testing and metrics Real-Time Systems Design and Analysis, Third Edition remains an unmatched resource for students and practicing software engineers who want improved designs, faster computation, and ultimate cost savings.
Recent technology involves large-scale physical or engineering systems consisting of thousands of interconnected elementary units. This monograph illustrates how engineering problems can be solved using the recent results of combinatorial mathematics through appropriate mathematical modeling. The structural solvability of a system of linear or nonlinear equations as well as the structural controllability of a linear time-invariant dynamical system are treated by means of graphs and matroids. Special emphasis is laid on the importance of relevant physical observations to successful mathematical modelings. The reader will become acquainted with the concepts of matroid theory and its corresponding matroid theoretical approach. This book is of interest to graduate students and researchers.
This second edition, which is intended to provide step-by-step approach to the fundamentals of systems development in interactive hands-on and stimulating learning environment, includes new chapters that focus on object-oriented analysis and design and approach to web application developmentTo enhance understanding of the subject, all the topics of the first edition have been reviewed and expanded. In this workbook, examples are introduced in the sequence in which they would be needed during systems analysis and designThe book first outlines the steps followed in analysis and design and then illustrates the same with examplesThe end-of-chapter practice exercises provide an incremental framework to reinforce the hands-on nature of learning. This should serve as an ideal workbook for students and instructors as well as for the systems analysts and designers of IT companies to solve their day-to-day systems related problems.
UML is a large and complex language, with many features in need of refinement or clarification, and there are different views about how to use UML to build systems. This book sheds light on such issues, by illustrating how UML can be used successfully in practice as well as identifying various problematic aspects of UML and suggesting possible solutions.
