The primary objective of this research has been to develop a basic scientific understanding of frazil and anchor ice including their formation (nucleation or sources), growth, characteristics, and evolution and to assess the roles that they play in the development of the ice cover during freeze-up particularly in edge ice formation, floe development, and ice cover formation. The report contains the results of the above studies. Keywords: Frazil ice; Anchor ice; Ice cover; Ice; Freeze-up; Ice formation; Alaska. (EDC).
The primary objective of this research was the development of a basic scientific understanding of frazil and anchor ice including their formation, growth, characteristics, and evolution in form and dynamics and their role in the development of the initial ice cover on a river. Interpretation of these data were directed toward developing an understanding of the physics of freeze-up as it involves frazil and anchor ice. (Author).
A lightweight sampler has been constructed to provide large cores from frazil ice deposits. Samples containing frazil ice particles ranging in size from 1 mm to over 70 mm, including the interstitial water, were successfully recovered during field tests. These samples were nearly undisturbed while confined in the sample tube, based on a comparison with samples acquired using a freeze phobe technique.
Excerpt from Ice Formation: With Special Reference to Anchor-Ice and Frazil On account of the wide demand for definite information in regard to ice phenomena, especially in connection with hydraulic development in the North, I decided to give the ice story of the St. Lawrence River as it has presented itself to me, both from personal observation and from intercourse with engineering friends. The present book is really the result of the need which has arisen for the republishing of my various papers on river-ice formation, which have appeared from time to time during the past ten years, and many of which are now out of print. In attempting a work of this kind I found that it would be better to present the facts as completely as possible by including an account of the elementary laws of heat-transmission, which bear particularly on the ice problem. It has also been thought wise to add a chapter on the physical constants of ice, for a great deal of valuable work has now been done which, when collected together from the original memoirs scattered through various scientific publications, forms an important addition to the study.
