Originally published in 1941, this book was written to provide an elementary textbook on phycology suitable for university students and schools including visits to marine biological stations as part of their curriculum. Relatively few types are selected from each algae group; some are described in considerable detail whilst others are mentioned to illustrate the course of development in either the vegetative or reproductive organs. Illustrative figures are included throughout. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in phycology and the history of science.
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Diatomace IN making his first acquaintance with the Diatomaceae the author experienced great difficulty in obtaining concise elementary information. He had to grope his way through a mass of irrelevant literature contained in the reports of Scientific Societies, to purchase many very expensive works, and, with much difficulty, to obtain access to certain rare old volumes. The study of diatoms is attracting an ever increasing circle of microscopists. By the discovery of fossil diatoms geologists are solving many important and difficult problems. The subject is one of surpassing interest. The field of study is vast, is largely unexplored, and is within the reach of all. Beautiful living specimens abound on every hand, in unpolluted watercourses, in ponds, and in moist places. The great want appears to be a concise introduction both to the diatom and its literature. The author trusts that the following pages may to some extent supply the want. He has collected his information from the highest sources, and has not refrained, where desirable, from using the precise language of eminent writers, whose teaching is better expressed in their own words. The author acknowledges with gratitude the generous assistance of Mr. Julien Deby, F who has placed at his disposal the Bibliography appended to this treatise. This book presents a wide-ranging introduction to the diatoms together with an illustrated description of over 250 genera. Diatoms are important as perhaps the commonest group of autotrophic plants on earth and are abundant in all waters and on soils and moist surfaces. The introduction describes the diatom cell in detail, the structure of the wall (often extremely beautiful in design), the cell contents and aspects of life cycle and cell division. The generic atlas section is the first account of diatom systematics since 1928 (Karsten in Engler and Prantl: Die Nauturlichen Pflanzenfamilien) and each generic description is accompanied by scanning electron micrographs to show the characteristic structure. Most of the latter have been prepared specially for this work from the authors' own collections. The Diatoms will be the standard reference work on the group for years to come and is an essential reference volume.
