This comprehensive guide provides a detailed overview of the principles and techniques of graphic design and structural engineering, exploring the intricate interplay between form, function, and aesthetics in the creation of a wide range of structures and objects, from buildings and bridges to complex machinery and consumer products. Featuring detailed case studies and analysis of real-world projects, this book is an essential resource for anyone involved in the design or engineering of physical objects. This book is an introductory text on structural analysis and structural design. While the emphasis is on fundamental concepts, the ideas are reinforced through a combination of limited versatile classical techniques and numerical methods. Structural analysis and structural design including optimal design are strongly linked through design examples.
Excerpt from Graphics and Structural Design This text is intended for the author's classes in General Engineering Design in Sibley College, Cornell University. The treatment of the subject has been kept as general as possible and is that used for his students during the past four or five years. The problems chosen for discussion are those on the border line between Civil and Mechanical Engineering. To the general designer knowledge of this subject is indispensable while acquaintance with the methods used in determining the stresses in, and the subsequent designing of, structures is of the greatest benefit to others in all designing for strength whether of machines or structures. Although the book is called "Graphics and Structural Design" the determination of the stresses has not been confined to graphical means; the other usual methods have been included. The design of a plate girder may seem out of keeping with the purpose of the book. The author formerly used a crane runway girder instead of the railway bridge, but decided that the railway girders made the more comprehensive and better problem. The design of the latter permitted the use of the moment table and acquainted the student with the usual method of treating locomotive and train loads. Incidentally, one who could design a railway plate girder was well prepared to design a runway girder, although the reverse was not so generally true. The author's practice is to use a set of problems paralleling the drawing-room work, to assign a number of these problems each week to the students upon which they recite. In a novel approach, this book looks at what happens when groups of people with differing outlooks and knowledge come together to design a building project.
"The structural designs that occur in nature - in molecules, in crystals, in living cells - appear in this fully illustrated book as a source of inspiration and study of design of man-made structures" -- BOOK JACKET.
Abstract: "The development of graphic based preliminary design programs is appealing because preliminary design involves the consideration of alternatives as concepts or sketches. The use of such a program would allow engineering students and new graduates to gain experience directly, through their own trial and error. This paper describes a graph based preliminary design program that was developed to facilitate teaching architect and engineering students about structural design."
