(from Afterword) 'My interest in this, what can I call him, this Australian psycho, came about because of my efforts at writing and publishing accounts of the cases of the famous Queensland detective, Doctor Watson Holmes Jackamara. Unfortunately my interest in the case from the position of my subject palled, for as Jackamara said: ‘This bloke left a trail that you could follow in a four wheel driver.’ Because of this, I was about to conclude that there was little interest in writing the case up, but when I had my first interview with Dr. Jefferson Davis. I instantly saw that this was where the interest lay. Dr. Jeff Davis at that first interview expressed interest in being the subject of a book. To some extent I agreed with him and continued the interviews. When he was not under the complete control of his medication or his delusions, he was quite, well, charming. I also found a fascination in delving into the perverted mind of this serial killer, a unique but brutal man who, thankfully, for the good of the world, remains incarcerated in a hospital for the criminally insane hopefully for the rest of his life. In my judgment, formed over a hundred and ten interviews, he is too great a danger, to society and to women in general, to be ever released. I found him utterly incorrigible, a psychotic who not only believed his fantasies to be real, but used them to initiate a series of murders which he labeled as acts of vengeance. His deeds shocked Queensland at the time and the Courier Mail headlined it as AN INDECENT OBSESSION.' - Mudrooroo An Indecent Obsession is a new novel from the author of Wild Cat Falling.

This is the most serious study to date on the topic of male same-sex relations in China during the early twentieth century, illuminating male same-sex relations in many sites: language, translated sexological writings, literary works, tabloid newspapers, and opera. Documenting how nationalism and colonial modernity reconfigured Chinese discourses on sex between men in the early twentieth century, Wenqing Kang has amassed a wealth of material previously overlooked by scholars, such as the entertainment news and opinion pieces related to same-sex relations published in the tabloid press. He sheds new light on several puzzles, such as the process whereby sex between men became increasingly stigmatized in China between the 1910s and 1940s, and shows that the rich vocabulary and concepts that existed for male-male relations in premodern China continued to be used by journalists and writers throughout the Republican era, creating the conditions for receiving Western sexology.
First published in 1961, and reissued in new editions several times, this is the pioneering, classic study of 20th-century Chinese fiction. The book covers some 60 years, from the Literary Revolution of 1917 through the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76. C. T. Hsia, Prof. Emeritus of Chinese at Columbia Univ., examines the major writers from Lu Hsun to Eileen Chang and representative works since 1949 from both mainland China and Taiwan. The first serious study of modern Chinese fiction in English, this book is also the best study of its subject available. Not only the specialist, but every reader who is interested in China or in literature will find it of interest. Hsia's astute insights and graceful writing make the book enjoyable as well as deeply edifying.
