P.G. King's copy of John Hunter's "An historial journal of the transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island" (London, 1793) annotated by King and also his son Phillip Parker King and grandson Philip Gidley King. The publication of Hunter's journal, which included material taken from King's diary without permission, ended their friendship. King wrote "Captain Hunter has obliquely attacked me. I could not expect an attack of this kind from Capt. Hunter. I shall not at present take the trouble to refute this palpable misinterpretation I assert and maintain the contrary". The annotations, made between October 1793 and January 1795, can be found mostly in Chapter 7 Transactions at Norfolk Island. The annotations on pages 170, 183, 189, 193, 195, 196, 197 and 198 are substantial. The notes made by P.P. King relate almost entirely to sailing and navigation, including notes on the tides in Botany Bay. The comments made by P.G. King consist of brief comments on Hunter's text, e.g. first reference to a kangaroo'.
The contributors to this book reveal different approaches to creating a colony. Using the rich collections of the Mitchell Library, the authors go beyond the traditional sources of history, highlighting the personal stories revealed through family letters, and creative interaction with the landscape through poetry and drawings.
