This study attempts to re-evaluate Lawrence's poetry, which has often been read as a set of biographical documents or supplementary notes to his novels, as fully independent literary work in the light of post-modern critical theory. The author carefully examines how Lawrence needed to misread his precursors, the nineteenth-century Romantics, to establish himself as one of the modern poets. What separates his poetry from his precursors' is his self-consciousness as a modern poet. His search for radical freedom in language and his meta-poetic exploration of a new poetic expression make him a true pioneer of the "terra incognita" in English poetry.
Seminar paper from the year 2024 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Göttingen, language: English, abstract: In this paper, I will show how Agbabi’s poetry challenges traditional dichotomies, such as black/white, male/female, and traditional/contemporary by blurring the lines between them and emphasising the interconnectedness of not only the opposing ends, but also of the different continuums. To pursue this, in the following chapter I will establish a theoretical framework on intersectionality and Black feminism, that helps to conceptualise the interconnectedness of the aspects. Subsequently, chapter 3 contains the main analysis. At the beginning of that chapter, I will first give a few more relevant information on the author and then account for how I came to the specific binaries mentioned before. Based on this, the close readings will then follow in sub-chapters structured after the three main categories. Finally, I will draw a conclusion that puts the pieces back together. ‘Not everything is black and white.’ This proverb encapsulates the essence of Patience Agbabi’s poetry, particularly evident in her collection Bloodshot Monochrome. Agbabi is a British poet, performer, and writer that has recently gained more attention. Her approach to poetry is innovative and dynamic, often challenging limits of traditional forms and tackling sensitive topics ranging from racial issues to gender norms. Especially interesting is how many of these issues can be put into binary categories that Agbabi often addresses implicitly, occasionally even explicitly. Not only does she make use of such dichotomies, but she also disrupts conventional societal perceptions and encourages her reader to question them. In her works, she often brings up not only one category, race for instance, but several at the same time, covering a vast range of matters. By that, she illuminates the interconnectedness of them, showing how someone’s race should not and cannot be regarded isolated from gender or sexuality or other aspects that are part of identity.

Exploring Second Language Creative Writing continues the work of stabilizing the emerging Creative Writing (SL) discipline. In unique ways, each essay in this book seeks to redefine a tripartite relationship between language acquisition, literatures, and identity. All essays extend B.B. Kachru’s notion of “bilingual creativity” as an enculturated, shaped discourse (a mutation of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis). Creative Writing (SL), a new subfield to emerge from Stylistics, extends David Hanauer’s Poetry as Research (2010); situating a suite of methodologies and interdisciplinary pedagogies, researchers in this book mobilize theories from Creativity Studies, TESOL, TETL, Translation Studies, Linguistics, Cultural Studies, and Literary Studies. Changing the relationship between L2 writers and canonized literary artefacts (from auratic to dialogic), each essay in this text is essentially Freirean; each chapter explores dynamic processes through which creative writing in a non-native language engages material and phenomenological modes toward linguistic pluricentricity and, indeed, emancipation.
Migrants and Literature in Finland and Sweden presents new comparative perspectives on transnational literary studies. This collection provides a contribution to the production of new narratives of the nation. The focus of the contributions is contemporary fiction relating to experiences of migration. The volume discusses multicultural writing, emerging modes of writing and generic innovations. When people are in motion, it changes nations, cultures and peoples. The volume explores the ways in which transcultural connections have affected the national self-understanding in the Swedish and Finnish context. It also presents comparative aspects on the reception of literary works and explores the intersectional perspectives of identities including class, gender, ethnicity, ‘race’ and disability. Further, it also demonstrates the complexity of grouping literatures according to nation and ethnicity. The case-studies are divided into three chapters: II ‘Generational Shifts’, III ‘Reception and Multicultural Perspectives’ and IV ‘Writing Migrant Identities’. The migration of Finnish labourers to Sweden is reflected in Satu Gröndahl’s and Kukku Melkas’s contributions to this volume, the latter also discusses material related to the placing of Finnish war children (‘krigsbarn’) in Sweden during World War II. Migration between Russia and Finland is discussed by Marja Sorvari, while Johanna Domokos attempts at mapping the Finnish literary field and offering a model for literary analysis. Transformations of the Finnish literary field are also the focus of Hanna-Leena Nissilä’s article discussing the reception of novels by a selection of women authors with an im/migrant background. The African diaspora and the arrival of refugees to Europe from African countries due to wars and political conflicts in the 1970s is the backdrop of Anne Heith’s analysis of migration and literature, while Pirjo Ahokas deals with literature related to the experiences of a Korean adoptee in Sweden. Migration from Africa to Sweden also forms the setting of Eila Rantonen’s article about a novel by a successful, Swedish author with roots in Tunisia. Exile, gender and disability are central, intertwined themes of Marta Ronne’s article, which discusses the work of a Swedish-Latvian author who arrived in Sweden in connection to World War II. This collection is of particular interest to students and scholars in literary and Nordic studies as well as transnational and migration studies.
